They are too busy trying to save the world and our children from total annihilation due to the primarily white male leaders dragging us from war to war, fixated on weaponry, power and control the way teen boys are fixated on their penises.

Thanks for the laughs, fellas. I always knew Zippy had many sides to him.
But getting back to the question: does it really matter so much? I mean, I can understand the whole masculine-supertall-testosterone connection. Add to that the fact that architecture (especially the more famous, starchitecture subset) is still largely dominated by men, and I'm not surprised at all. Maybe we should do a survey. I know Curbed did one a little while ago.
If we are supposed to be anonymous online, then how else would you tell whether the person writing a post is a man or a woman? For instance, could I be a woman, assuming my username was merely an homage to Billy Joel? What gives it away?

Now I thought Billy Joel, but I'm sure some thought Renzo Piano.
pianoman11686

It's neither: I play the instrument. Though "Pianoman" is one of my favorite Billy Joel songs, and I do like Renzo Piano.

Reason:
Guys surf (still) more than women. In general.
Women are starting to close that gap, but just like guys, they start in the areas tehy feel most comfortable with. Guys felt more comfortable in places where they could talk about games, or argue about things, and women (sorry ladies) IN GENERAL, felt better about relationships and fighting.
Doubt me? See how many are at LIWeddings dot com and look at the ratio. Most of the people signed up there are "couples" but the women usually post.
I think a site like this, just like the % of people taking Civil Engineering and Architecture courses, will be predominantly male.
I think both society and a wee bit of genetic preclusion have something to do with it, but until more women are encouraged to get into these subjects from childhood, you will still see this imbalance in the building world, and on sites that reflect those that are interested in it.

It's a play on the traditional expression, usually from a woman's perspective, of "I found me a sugar Daddy." It just means that they've found a man (usually older) who's wealthy and will shower them with gifts.

You've blown your cover, Ninj. It's obvious to me that you're Lawrence Summers. ;)
From your source at Wiki:
Differences between males and females
Main article: Sex and intelligence#Controversy
In January 2005, Summers suggested at an economic conference that one reason there are fewer women than men in science and engineering professorships might be innate sex differences in the distribution of intelligence. The suggestion was that variation in intelligence (in particular with regard to science and math ability) is higher in males, resulting in a higher number of highly intelligent males, resulting in more men at the very high levels of "intrinsic aptitude" that scholarly jobs required. An attendee made his remarks public, and a firestorm followed in the national news media and on Harvard's campus, which incorrectly implied that Summers argued that men are somewhat more intelligent than women on average.
He is not too far off, and he was misrepresented. Certain predilections are apparent in one sex over the other, and society has a tendency to amplify these through what it considers acceptable for people to learn and practice.
Girls lpay differently than boys, and behave differently, but on top of that, we treat them differently, further augmenting (or enforcing) the genetic proclivity towards certain behavior.
This makes it VERY hard for a woman to succeed in math and science. If you are a female that is good at these things you are not encouraged to go for them.
Now, people saying "OMG THIS IS SEXIST!!!" need to take a step back and look at how even hormones can effect how you think and act. Guys ON steroids show an amplified male pattern behavior of aggressiveness and impulsive action. This has a tendency to inhibit (to put it nicely) their social interactions. You think Estrogen just sits there and does nothing in the mind? It would be interesting to see exactly how this effects not only physical, but mental development over the life of a child.
One thing to keep in mind that a lot of times it is not one thing or another that determines how a person develops, but a combination of them. Having too much testosterone in your system as a boy will not encourage scholastic behavior and will not lend him to study and develop that part of the mind through the learning phase. As an adult that would prove to be a disadvantage when it comes to teh subjects that were not persued.
Does that mean that if the testosterone was not there that he would have been a better student? What about if his parents pushed him more? What about if he was a she?
In the end, I think they will find that our wiring is a little different even from birth. It then develops differently through our lives and through the societal trends that have shaped us for millenia until we are who we are.
Bottom line being, women in general are not encouraged to take this as an interest, and may not, ON AVERAGE, be inclined to have an aptitude for it.
But, if you all are familiar with math, the average does not always determine the standard deviation, or the ammount of people at the extremes. There are just as many women as men that I believe would have been in the top ranks of any technical profession if they were encouraged to do so as children.
I am all for more women in math, science and engineering. AAMOF, I was for that 15 years ago when I was in college!!! ;)

No...I'm attacking. I was not boosting NY State, I was saying positive things about it. It just sounds like pianoman has some sort of beef with NY because everything he said about it is negative.
Examples:
Niagara Falls, NY is ****(maybe now it is, but not for long, new highrises are going up)
Long Island has no cliffs(my ass)
Long Island's cliffs are just big hunks of sand(my ass)
Letchworth is not impressive(my ass)
Canada's Niagara Falls is better(maybe it is now, but not for long)
Canada's got the best side of Thousand Islands Seaway(my ass)
I'll get more "NY sucks" comments.

If you're going to be quoting someone, especially while cross-referencing a thread, you should learn how to use the quote function and not attribute statements to that person, if they were worded differently, because certain things can be taken out of context. Furthermore, there's no need to get defensive when there is already a link to the other thread, and other people can visit it at any time and make up their own minds.

I see a practical need, as opposed to ideological need, for more female members. There's a part of New York City that is under-represented on this site in subjects that women tend to be more knowledgeable about than men. To name a few: dance events, the ballet, the opera, interior decorating, entertaining, child care, shopping, fashion, beauty salons... and so on and so on...
The Questions & Answers Forum would especially benefit from more women. To drive the point home, ya'll answer this:
"I live in Kansas and I'm coming to Manhattan (for the first time) to be the matron of honor at my neice's wedding party. My hair is chin-length, straight, thin, and mostly gray. My neice only knows of "village" hair salons. Where can I go so that I'll look fashionable enough for Manhattan, but classic enough when I return home?"

I wouldn't necessarily, either. It's just women on average vs. men on average. My apologies to those men who are well-entrenched in any of those activities.
