The day Smith's Bar closes down is the day I just might have to move out of NYC.

I never go there, but it is emblematic of a certain era of Times Square.

The day Smith's Bar closes down is the day I just might have to move out of NYC.

I never go there, but it is emblematic of a certain era of Times Square.

Old-timers will remember many Smith's Bars in Manhattan, mostly concentrated downtown. Their attraction for me as a youngster was obviously not the beer. They served tremendous deli sandwiches at low prices. Hot steaming corned beef, heaped high on fresh rye bread, with sharp deli mustard and a large dish of pickle slices on the table.

The 44th Street Smith's transforms at night into an impromptu music club. They clear out the seats and tables by the front window and a jazz or blues band sets up.
