Where outside of Manhattan did you visit?

And what did you think of the Morgan Library expansion?

Where outside of Manhattan did you visit?
There's a little Red Hook, DUMBO and Williamsburg, as well as Flatbush Avenue, in among the pics. I hired a town car and traveled all over Brooklyn in the rain without taking too many photos. I wanted to get to the bottom of the question, "Is most of Brooklyn ugly?"

And what did you think of the Morgan Library expansion?
Last time I saw Morgan, it was a house with a terrific collection. Now it's a vast modernist atrium with a gift shop, a restaurant, a glass elevator, nice bathrooms and oh yes, some rooms from the house with a terrific collection. Used to be you could find solitude there, but now it's packed. Guess that makes it a big success.

* * *

The architecture of Piano's addition is a whole lot like MoMA's. This must be the official style for museums. Whitney will doubtless follow suit.

Diagnosis? Or do you not have enough evidence to decide yet?

Glad you liked the Morgan. I saw a photo of the Polish consulate in there, too. Did you happen to wander inside?

Oh, I have evidence; went through every neighborhood in Brooklyn. I'm just afraid of getting flogged (or is it flayed?).

MrSpice has it about right.

Every neighborhood? That must've taken a while. I hope you broke it up into a couple trips.

I haven't spent too much time in Brooklyn. I'm fairly familiar with Bensonhurst, Greenpoint, and certain areas around BAM. But it's been a while since I've done more than just drive through it. Did that on the way to LaGuardia a couple weeks ago, and did not like what I saw on the edges of the BQE. Then again, I didn't like what I saw on Canal Street either.

The thing it's got going for it is its sheer size, and almost limitless possibilities for neighborhood gems. Did you notice if the borough, as a whole, had the appearance of an area that was undergoing renewal, and reconstruction? Or did a lot of places still look like they were decaying?

There's only one city I've ever visited that was pristine in almost every neighborhood, and that's Vancouver. Everything looked so incredibly new and sterile, almost exhaustingly so. But Vancouver is a city of only 600,000, and Brooklyn's got more people than the former's entire metro area. Plus, Brooklyn's older, so there's bound to be more crap. But is the majority of it crap? And is it the kind that can't be remade (e.g. Soho), but must be demolished and replaced with something new? If that is the case, then I think there are a lot of misconceptions out there (myself not excluded).

Did I say that?

Not directly, but I got the sense that you did.

Gorgeous building. Didn't even think of going inside. Figured I'd have to be frisked.

It's a real gem. Inside, it's reminiscent of something you'd expect to see in Vienna, or Paris - excessive and unnecessary opulence. Must be a pain to maintain, but beautiful to look at, notwithstanding. Haven't been there since 9/11, so I don't know how tight security is. But it's a consulate, not an embassy; I'd bet that if you wanted to take some pictures, there'd be no issue.

Didn't take quite all afternoon. You get a better deal with a town car if you hire it for a spell. In Brooklyn, they're as prevalent as yellow cabs, coz you can phone for them in the wilds.

Plus you get to feel like a plutocrat in your cushy leather seat.

About Brooklyn not being all that bad.

Interesting comment about McGoldrick Park being like Gramercy Park or St Johns Park in times past. There are a lot of little jewels in Brooklyn.

Now now Luca, the Woolworth Building? You mean to say that you wouldn't buy a building in London first? Maybe one of those beautiful skyscrapers you have there.

I understand there's a giant walkie-talkie in the London pipeline. Maybe they'll be willing to flip it on completion.

Jacakss...:p

London skyscrapers are pretty ugly (indeed like most skyscrapers everywhere - including NYC). NYC, though, has my favorites: ESB, Chrysler, Radiator and Woolworth. There are LOTS of buildings in London I'd love to have, but I was talking about Ablarc's pictures.

Ablarc-

My compliments. Excellent photos and some I would mind enlarging and framing.

I am happy to see you made it to Park Slope. Now, when we argue Atlantic Yards, I know you know where I am arguing from.

Very enjoyable. From greenery to gray. And some fun stuff inbetween.

Bravo!

:D Girl in the middle ~ I think the zipper of her jeans is open.

No: Closer inspection was required ;) - but it's an optical illusion.

Never has a whole bunch of greyness looked so fine.
Thanks again Ablarc.

...refreshing to see your photos. I've been away from the city for much much too long. I hope to do a weekend photoshoot as soon as the temp rises out of the fourties! Thanks ablarc!
