Hi guys, My moms a fello new yorker but I was born in Scotland. Now my husband and I are visiting New York in October and I wanted your opinions. What do you think is a better visitor's attraction? The Rockefeller centre OR the Empire state? We are only going to be there for 2 nights so we will probably only visit one of these. Also, when is the least busy time to visit these places?
Thanks :o

Top of the Rock for my money.
Stunning views of Central Park, the midtown skyscrapers AND the Empire State Building.

Go at dusk - you can beat seeing the sun go down and the lights come up.

Plus Top of the Rock has shorter wait time to reach the top, so if you've only got two days in NYC then you'll have more time to do other things ...

Each of these has its strong points and weaknesses. The main ESB observatory (on the 86th floor) is about 20 stories higher than Top of the Rock, and the view of the top of the tower from there (especially at night) is glorious:

Because the observatory wraps around the outside of the building, it does not offer 360-degree views, and there is a rather formidable anti-jumper fence between the viewer and the views:

While not as high, the third level of Top of the Rock offers nearly unobstructed 360-degree views and no anti-suicide barricade.

that pic is stunning.

It certainly is, but I'm not its creator and am not sure who is. Googling identifies this as its possible ultimate source:

Great pictures, City Spire.

As for the best observation spot, I'd have to go with the good ol' Empire State.

Hey, how can King Kong be wrong?

Rockefeller is your better bet. It is a much more central and interesting location to visit on the ground level, not just the views.

As for the obs. decks, I'm proud to say I've never been to either, even though I scaled the roof of 7 World Trade Center, partied right under the columns on top of Bankers Trust on Wall Street, bumped into Ricky Martin on top of Time Warner Center, trespassed into the elevator-inaccessible gym on top of Flatotel, and snapped photos from right behind the enormous Tarzan ad on Times Square, to name a few of my observation experiences.

Why are you 'proud' that your never been to either?
....and how did you get to those other places? Can we see your photos?
