Want a cheap breakfast and a place where the waitresses treat you like you've been coming there forever?

Well, it looks like you're out of luck -- BUFFA's Deli & Coffee Shop at the edge of Little Italy at 54 Prince St. [ "Established 1928" ] has papered over the windows and posted "Work Permit" to allow for interior alterations.

What's there to alter?

It was great as it was -- orange vinyl stools and all ...

All signs of the former Buffa's are now gone

New construction fence is going up in prep for facade renovation ...

Looks like it had evolved organically for decades. Now it'll all spring whole from Zeus's head.

Too bad.

Places whose history you can read are getting rare; these days, every place has a theme instead.

To tell the truth the atmosphere at Buffa's was cool, but the food was D-

And that's saying alot considering I'm talking eggs and home fries ...

According to a recent article in the NY Times (http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/09/06/dining/06rlis2.html) it looks like the new joint won't be too serious (we'll have to wait and see about the prices) ...
