I love New York, I visit the city a few times a year, just for pleasure, to enjoy the terrific buzz there is about the place.

I also love the yellow cabs, you can hail one so easily day or night, and they're cheap, unlike London black cabs that are expensive and like gold-dust day or night.

But oh why are they so cramped? - they're big long cars with such a small interior - and why are they always so scruffy?

I'm surprised that New York doesn't have its own London-like cabs, they can turn on a sixpence, getting in is so easy and they can carry 5 in reasonable comfort.

Just a visitor's observation.

A good observation. 'Twas not always so. When cabs were De Sotos: http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4273&page=4

Toyota Siennas and Honda Odysseys are roomier and can be found occasionally in the present New York fleet, but they're cursed with sliding doors and are fairly hard to get in and out of. The London cab is perfect but so expensive that it can't be used profitably in New York. Scroll around in the link above for a discussion that includes a bona fide cabbie.

The newest arrivals, Ford hybrids, are perhaps even worse from a passenger comfort standpoint, so it doesn't look like relief is in sight.
