Arguably New York's all round nicest neighborhood.

Stunning photos, Zip. I hadn't considered it before, but it looks like the Dalton could give the Ansonia a run for its money. Together, they're probably the finest duo of apartment buildings not located on the park.

I've always wondered about Gray's Papaya there; it seems a little out of place.

Classy.

The Random House tower actually looks good from that angle. (photo 1)

Wow, really have to get down there sometime soon. Great pics. Haven't looked down Broadway ever since TWC went up.

Has anyone eaten at the P&G Cafe (pic 12)?

Well, someone had better try it soon, because according to an article just posted by
bigkdc on "The decline of New York's retail diversity" thread,

it may not be there very long:

"Proprietors of the hallowed P&G Cafe Bar on the Upper West Side continue to hear rumors of their replacement at the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and 73rd Street by an as-yet-unknown bank branch once their lease runs out in 2008. By bar manager Steve Hale’s count, there are already at least 10 banks within three blocks of the 60-year-old neighborhood institution."

Thanks for these excellent photos Zippy.

I was in there with a friend sometime in the 90s.

I stopped in to use the facilities, and since it's bad form to take a whizz and leave, we had a few brews.

I don't remember much. There were booths, and people were having meals at the bar. It was late afternoon.

Seemed to be lots of neighborhood regulars.

I came to this thread after reading that article, remembering the photo.

I love this area. Well I take the train there almost everyday and I never get tired of walking around this intersection. :)

Funny, I was just thinking "What a great area this used to be".

Nowadays I have no reason or desire to go to the immediate area at all, save perhaps to walk from the Subway to Riverside Park ... but more often I'll go up farther north a stop or two -- just to avoid looking at what 72nd / Broadway has become.

Different perspectives ...

...what 72nd / Broadway has become.
What has it become?

It's like a suburban strip mall.

Well, building-wise you've got the silly looking Alexandria at the NW corner. And now there seemingly will be an atrocious box going up at the SW corner. A bunch of banks all around.

Lots of strollers crowding the sidewalks.

To my eye not a very interesting or attractive bunch of people on the streets.

Aside from that ...
