You must have a license to own a gun in the New York. I believe you have to have a good reason (business owner, security, etc.) in order to apply for a license.

shotguns likely to attract more liberal licensing than evil handguns.

I just saw something on the Peoples Court about a bounty hunter who was arrested for carrying a firearm in Manhattan without the proper licence. He had had a Suffolk County licence and spent 26 hours in jail before being released on his own recognizance. The guys lawyer was able to plead it out to disorderly conduct which is equivalent to a traffic ticket in NY.

Things wound up alright for him but I wouldn't want to take to the chance of having to spend 26 hours in jail in NYC!!!

Sounds difficult, if not impossible, to acquire and maintain a permit to own a rifle in NYC.

Totally not impossible, guy at work has a handgun permit in NYC, two of my uncles also have handgun permits in NYC. But it _is_ a bit tedious. They do a _real_ background check before issuing it, it isn't just a take the money / rubber stamp type deal. If you are clear on background and fit one of the categories, you can do it. Buddy got one for working nights in a NYC deli and having to make deposit occassionally. One Uncle got one by going through "security guard school", he said that is what enabled him to get approved. I don't know much about rifles, other than I _thought_ shotguns/rifles were _supposed_ to be easier than handguns.
