Did you watch Taxi Driver on TV?

The Yellow Cab Company was founded in Chicago in 1915 by John Hertz. At the time, a University of Chicago study determined that yellow was the easiest color to spo from a distance.

In 1929, the same guy founded the car rental company, and its logo is still yellow.

sice 1967, all NYC medallion cabs are required to be painted yellow.

There was even a movie:

Before the current regulation for the rooftop dome with the ID number, they were translucent plastic with lights inside. The whole thing glowed, and iit was much easier to spot a vacant cab.

Yellow is a common theme in transportation: Yellow Freight, Yellow Roadway, etc.
