I have always either lived with my parents or roommates, so it never really hit me how expensive cable and internet really is.

I am going to get my own place in manhattan, and I was looking at RCN and Time Warner. Anyone have advice on the best packages? Here is what I am use to

DVR (i travel alot for work)

HBO/OnDemand (Cant miss entourage!)

10 mbps Internet (ok, this can be slightly downgraded, how is the RCN 1.5 MBPS any techies got insight?) Also I realized RCN charges for a Static IP, now TWC was pretty good about this, your IP was not Static, but as long as your modem was not off for 7 days, it would renew the same IP. Does RCN work in a similar fashion?

I like having the additional Digital Channels, BBC, FitTV, all those random channels are great

HD (STD just doesnt look good on my LCD)

Right now it seems that I am looking at a bill of about 120/month, are there any cheaper options? I have had TW when I lived in Astoria and thought their service was excellent, anyone have experience with RCN and TW who can give some feedback.

Thanks

I dunno, based on your specs the price looks about right. You should be able to get your phone thrown in there too, BTW.

Thanks, but there is no need for a phone. I am usually out of town M-Th, so I live on my cell in any case and weekends are free on the cell.

My TW bill (2 HD DVRs + broadband) = ~$170/mo. BTW, RCN, even if available at your new place, is not a long-term option; it's broke and has put itself up for sale (http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6393311.html). TW should experience some downward pricing pressure when Verizon rolls out its FIOS broadband+TV service in Manhattan a few years hence.

Thanks for the Info, this would explain why the RCN UI has been changing to one similar to TW.

Any idea when FiOS is expected, it is the best signal I have ever had and I have experience with TW, RCN, iO, now FiOS... Right now it seems to me that FiOS is targeting areas where Cablevision is offered.

BTW my FiOS Bill
1 HDDVR, 1HD Box, 1 SD Box, Broadband (5MBps), All digital channels, Showtime, TMC, HBO, Starz with all their on demands AND PHONE w/ unlimited long distance and canada = 155. And FiOS has every local channel in HD :-) plus a boat load more you cant even get on other providers. (Yes I sound like a ad, but Verizon has impressed me for once)

FiOS just appeared here in South Shore Staten Island last week, really cheap and really fast. I'm actually thinking about switching.

I have one TV and 2 PCs, only pay about $110.. I think you can do better than that loft...Do you have a router for the PCs?...
