I've read that New York state does not impose property tax on cars, unlike Connecticut. But does New York City have a property tax for cars?

Can't seem to find any info online. A big thanks to anyone with info!

This is a little out of date, but it does confirm that NYS does not have value-based taxes on motor vehicles:

http://www.ncsl.org/programs/fiscal/autotaxs.htm

Traditionally, value-based taxes were imposed on many kinds of personal property. These generally became unenforceable, since it was easy to hide property other than real estate from the tax assessor, and many states did away with personal property taxes. However, since cars and boats must be registered with the state anyway, taxing these remained feasible, so the taxes remained on the books. These are usually a revenue source for local government.

Vehicle registration fees are different. They are not based on vehicle value, and like the gasoline tax, are a type of user fee that helps pay for the costs of maintaining, operating, and policing the transportation system.

No vehicle property tax in NY, and registration is fairly cheap. Well, compared to AZ at least (which DOES have a vehicle license tax.)

The income tax will kill ya, though.
