Born and raised in NYC, I moved out to Southern California about 7 years ago and still haven't adapted. Sure ..the weather is great, the scenery is beautiful and it's more roomy. But it sucks.
My problem is the people, we just don't click!. Now I'm a very outgoing guy and I've always had tons of friends in NY. I'm very sociable and like to chat if the topic is interesting and/or the participants are lively. But quite frankly I haven't had a decent conversation about anything worth discussing with anyone since I've been here. Everyone is so f*cking superficial and materialistic that I find it hard to connect. It's almost like we're from different countries sometimes. Southern californians have very little sense of what's going on in the rest of the nation, let alone the world. It makes you feel like you're speaking to a retard when you reference things in a conversation that you think are common knowledge only to draw a blank stare. And if you have an accent ( like I do ..I'm from LawnGuyland :-), they find it difficult to follow if you talk too fast.
Sense of humor?. ZILCH!. These people have the wit & charm of field-grown asparagus. In fact, I've done a little private research & study 'in the field' so to speak and my results strongly indicate that there is a direct correlation between the blondness in ones hair and his/her level of stupidity. Sadly for Aryan supremecists, Hitler apparently was very wrong. Speaking of the devil .., the last time I had seen so many blond people gathered all in one place was in the Hitler Youth rallies on the History Channel.
It's kinda depressing because I'm Italian-American and these pink people feel alien. Thank God I've got the Mexicans who are funny and friendly and darker -skinned like me.
Anyway, that's MY experience. I'd like to hear comments from people who have lived significant periods in BOTH cities to compare notes with. I dunno maybe it's me. I'm seriously thinking about moving back to NYC because of this.
