The Major Deegan is I-87 (becomes the NY State Thruway in Westchester). If you're looking for the easiest way to Toronto, just take the NYS Thruway to Niagra Falls, Cross into Canada and take the QEW to Toronto. It's about an 8-9 hour drive in all. Best way to the Deegan from Manhattan would be probaly the Madison Ave. bridge off of the Harlem River Drive.
