I visited this arts collective in Brooklyn in December but have been unable to work out if it's now closed or not.

Some sites say it has closed, others say it's still open.

Anyone got any idea?

Cheers!

Did you try phoning or e-mailing them? Both options are easily searchable on Google, and they appear to be on MySpace.

It's not a conventional venue so I doubt if they're going to have a secretary on hand and I don't fancy ringing them from the UK!

Oh well.

Ah, I got an answer off my own site!

Apparently this was part of their landlord's petition to the court:

"The court can see that these people operate parties
under a business
name D.U.M.B.A. COLLECTIVE.
These are run almost every weekend and people pay to
get into the
parties. The court can see that
the sex offered is deviate sex, i.e. Lesbian and/or
Gay. When they are
running their parties they
have tremondous (sic) loudspeakers that you can almost
hear all over
Brooklyn and these parties
run almost to dawn. After the party on Monday morning
you can see loads of empty beer bottles that
is (sic) left over by them. I cannot say that they are
running a house of
prostitution because I
personally did NOT see such activiity. However, the
advertising they do
can certainly lead one to
such conclusions."

Looks like a great place for "Art" and "culture".....

Or a bunch of people that just miss college parties. Whichever.

In my experience, these sort of events bear precious little similarity to a college party.
Thankfully.

There was a superb arts squat in Brixton, London that lasted quite a few years before 'The Man' closed it down and bailiffs came in and trashed the building.

Where there used to an art gallery, rehearsal rooms, a jazz cafe, poetry and live venue there's now an ugly rotting eyesore of a building used by crack heads - and it's been that way for ten years now.
