Hello all:

I'm new to this forum, but thought maybe this would be a good place to get a question answered. I am looking for an apartment for a vacation in September, 2007. I recently got a response from an owner who gives the building address as 180 west 55th. I have "googled" this address every way I can think of and come up empty. Can someone please tell me what, if anything, is at 180 west 55th. Is it really an apartment building or is this guy running some kind of scam. Also, if there is a good way to get info on buildings based on addresses, I would like to know about it. (I tried city realty, emporis, and natefind.)

Thanks in advance for your help.

I couldn't find it listed on the NYC Department of Buildings website.

Go to www.nyc.gov (http://www.nyc.gov)

At the left there is a box with a scroll down list of CIty Agencies ...

Choose "Buildings" ...

On that page you'll see 3 boxes on the right ...

Choose the Borough, enter street number and street name ... Click "Submit" ...

This will take you to the page for the building ...

At the upper left is a link to "View All Adresses" ... this will show all the numbered lots that the building covers.

There is a lot of other info available via links on the main page for each building.

At first it can be confusing but once you get the hang of it then it's fairly easy to navigate.

btw: DOB shows no adresses for buildings on W. 55th between #164 <> #200.

When you enter any address between those two DOB (http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/PropertyProfileOverviewServlet?boro=1&houseno=180+&street=west+55th+street&requestid=0&s=A03C41B885B461E4F46BD08866A7430E) shows (here's 180 W. 55th):

NOT A VALID ADDRESS

.. is this guy running some kind of scam.

Seems so ...

Can we play detective?

I'd love to bust this guy.

Where did you find the info about the prospective apartment?

Did he ask for $$$ ??

Do you have any contact info for this fellow -- phone / email address?

If you don't want to post it you can PM me the info.

btw: Are you from Cupertino, CA? I originally am from that neck of the woods

I did a little fieldwork for you Mike. I live in Midtown, and WTF, I figured I had to go to the bank anyway.

The SE corner of 7th and 55th is the Ben Ash deli. The apartments above it, which would be 180 W. 55th if anything was, have an address on 7th Avenue .. ."The Wyoming."

Sorry, you're being scammed.

Hello all:

Thanks for the many helpful responses to my post. This group appears to be an excellent source of information. We're planning a 3 week manhattan vacation for September, 2007 so I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Thanks especially to Front_Porch for going above and beyond and actually checking out the location. I really appreciate it.

Thanks again. To quote Jack Nicholson: "I'll be back".
