This question goes out to those Real New Yorkers who know about NYC like the back of their hands. A question behest of all those college students, artists, hipsters, and bohemians out there, for the year 2007: What neighborhoods in Manhattan offer $900-$1100 rent/month for a 1 bedroom apartment?

Please don't count me in any of those categories, but you will be looking at the Bronx, and pretty much only the Bronx. If you are opposed to the Bronx, you will be looking at roommates. And that's the end of the story.

After posting, I just noticed that you specified Manhattan as your only choice. In that case, you are completely out of luck.

Either look Uptown or in West Queens:
Astoria, Long Island City (Hunters Point), Jackson Heights with rents ranging from $900 and up/month

If you're looking for even cheaper areas, look in Woodside, Sunnyside, Maspeth, Middle Village, and Ridgewood

I believe the definition comes from someone fishing for buisness teh way that the "trollers" do. Basically dropping a net and sailing around dragging it behind and seeing what you catch. No real point or purpose other than to catch whatever they can get.
I always thought it was like the Troll under the bridge. Someone just bothering everyone that crossed it trying to get something out of them. But that is not the origin.
These guys were better about it than most. They came in, posted a seemingly legit innocuous question with no real links, waited a bit, then posted again with a response and links to the site they are pushing. Very nice spammage!
The only thing that would have been better would have been if they just posted a few more times B4 spamming.
Oh, Zip, I would remove the way you found out about them, it is not too difficult to use different, well, you know, to do this.......

The term "troll" has become generic for all sorts of pests on the internet.
I think originally, it described people who visit chat rooms and forums only to fish (or troll) for arguments. One of the tactics is to assume two or more identities and escalate discussions into brawls.
The particular case here was one person registering with two identiities, which is against forum rules. I have no idea why it was done; maybe a personality flaw.

So the question now is: How did Schadenfrau know..........
Maybe it is because she is all 3????
She asks a question, answers it..and then shops her self-LOL
(esspecially since Schdenfrau is Swiss for damadged/insase woman)
Seriously though Schadenfrau....why did u think that, I would not have thought twice... not that i am any kind of authority...just curious to see how u worked it out

Schadenfrau isn't Swiss (or German) for anything. I've posted that a few times, but I'll say it again.
I'm definitely not a troll, but I do have a good eye for them. These two used the same stilted language and asked the same sort of banal, pointless questions that anyone living in NYC wouldn't bother to ask. Also, one of them had posted a random screed about neighborhoods that could only have come straight from Real Estate Scams 101.
I'm actually surprised that neither of them posted a reference to "The Big Apple," because that was about the level they were working on.

this post got me thinking about property in NY...since there seems to be a very high proportion of new yorkers who rent...how much do properties cost- are they über inflated due to the lack of them on the market??
What could i get for for 400k, anything?

I saw a 500 sq foot 4th floor walk up condo (ugly new construction) in my inconvenient corner of Greenpoint for $380K a few months ago.

You could find something quite nice and large in the Bronx for that price, but you have to remember that monthly maintenance fees are often as much as the mortgage.

And when you ask what the $1000/mo maintenance fees are for, they just look at you like you are crazy for even asking the question.

$12,000 per year maintainance.... are they rebuilding the place every few years???
So the landlord pays such maintainance??
What type of yield could you get for a $400k property in the rental market?

Out of the boroughs, whats left of affordability is in the Bronx. You will find pockets of good neighborhoods scattered througout. I'd go with Riverdale, Kingsbridge Heights, Woodlawn, Morris Park, Pelham Bay, Pelham Gardens, Throggs Neck, City Island, & Country Club.
These days, Port Morris -located in the southern tip of the Bronx- is yuppified.
But, if you're looking for a more neighborhood feel with ethnic variety, try Pelham Parkway (Albanians, Jewish, Asian, Blacks, & Hispanics)

Port Morris is hardly "yuppified."
