I'm a college student here in NYC and don't currently have a job. I've called several blood centers about getting paid for giving plasma to no success. Yes I am doing it for the cash b/c i'm dead broke, but it also serves a good cause---saving lifes. So, anyone know of a place I can go to? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think these places are going to pay any more than $10 or so, and you can only visit once a week:

Are you in school full-time? Could you do some sort of work study program?

Firstly I agree with Schadenfrau, you will only get around $10 a time - you may as well take up a paper round. Secondly if you were to go every week it would mean keeping your blood within normal range at all times. So if you were relying on it for cash then it may not be so predictable. You will also start to look like a junky as your arm will have permanent needle marks.
There are better ways to earn more cash quickly:
* Psychology experiments, all college/university psychology departments have to do tests (memory, learning etc). They will pay you about $10 per 30-60 mins. However unlike the blood donations you can do as many as you want. Since everyone doing a master or PHD has to have participents to support their work you should be able to earn enough to support yourself.
* Medical research. Ok this is more risky, but not too bad. If you think about it every painkiller etc has to be tested on healthy people to be seen as safe.... so millions of drugs are tested each year. I did a few of these when I was in uni. They pay about $4000 for a 2 week study- just for painkillers.
They also do studies for specific ilnesses. For example hayfever- you get slightly less for studies where u have an ilness as there is also a potential for u to be cured.
There is also a good reason to do this as it can potentiall save lives with the research conducted.
the website is:
www.testwiththebest.com (http://www.testwiththebest.com)
though i am sure there are others.
Before doing it though you should be carful, dont wade in without serious thought just because u can earn a quick few grand.

I just found out that I'd have to go to New Brunswick, NJ to donate. I don't think they're paying donors in NYC anymore. I'll look into selling my body for drug research though.
The site you have, testwiththebest.com, doesn't have any research centers in NYC though. Do you any others?

Is your reluctance to find traditional work due to school-related time constrictions? There has to be some better way to earn money than this, especially considering how little money it's going to be.

No, I've been applying to jobs for a month now. I'm just willing to apply anywhere about now.

I will have a look if there are any nearer by for you.
The advantage of clinical trials if you are a student is that (apart from the cash incentive) your food is included and you have tons of spare time to work of dissertations etc.
I will post back if i find one.

I cannot vouch for this though.
Please do not consider sperm donation.... $60 is not worth it in the long term. Granted there is a medical benefit to it, but i think it is something that should only ever be done for this reason.....
Notice how men are paid $60 for sperm and women $8,000 for eggs... lol

The process for women donating eggs is a tiny bit more involved.

Granted- I am not disputing this. I am just remarking on the fact that a man would need to donate 133 times to make this much. Since there has to be a 48 hour gap between donation that means that even if you went as quickly as you could it would take 266 days or 8-9 months (and thats assuming they except donations on a Sunday) to make that much.

A guy has to masturbate into a cup to donate sperm. A woman has to spend a couple of months heavily medicated (fertility drugs), visiting a doctor all the time, then she has the egg(s) extracted with a huge syringe. I'm guessing that would be kind of a drag for her sex life, so the $8k seems about right.
How is $60 not "worth it" for men in the long run? $60 seems like a lot of money considering the frequency at which most men take part in the activity at hand.

Well it is not a case of getting paid to masturbate..... the 'long run' is the consquences further down the line. Sure $60 seems great now but what if you later try and have kids but cannot..... but have several biological kids that you have never met.
some people might not have an issue with this... I was just saying that people should consider that they are not paying you for your sperm because it looks nice in a little tub. They are using it to make children. I think this is something that should only be done under careful consideration... there is a positive social impact to such a donation but Î think (just my own take) that it should be done for the right reason- not because you got $60 to fill a cup.
With regards to the $8k for a womans egg; this is meant to cover incidental costs only. For example loss of work days etc. Its not meant as a comercial incentive to sell on ones reproductive materials.
In refrence to your point (Ryan) that it would be a downer on womens sex lifes, i am sure many men would not look fowards to the prospect of 266 days of masturbation on alternate days and no sex for the duration.

You seem to agree that it's a much more involved process for women to donate eggs - both are compensated for the relative effort/time/risks involved - so I don't understand why you still want the money to add up. Am I missing something?

Yes...the point where I ever said I excpected the money to add up.
I was just saying that sperm donation was not a viable way of making a large sum of money quickly....
If fact I would certainly hope that they would not offer more money to men-given the lack of concern about doing it for $60....
Please don't get me wrong- i think anyone doing it as a genuine donation deserves praise, I would just worry that someone would not fully consider the prospect of fathering a child they will never know. This is something I could never do.
