For nearly three decades, a giant 22-ton spherical sculpture created by German artist Fritz Koenig sat in the plaza between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Miraculously, The Sphere survived the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, its scarred and pitted surface an eloquent silent witness to the tragedy of that day. In this documentary, filmmaker Percy Adlon (SUGARBABY; BAGDAD CAFE), who made two prior films about Koenig, joins the sculptor five weeks after the attacks to view his monumental work amidst the rubble of Ground Zero.

Although I think it is cool, it is not miraculous that a giant hunk of metal "survived" the collapse. It would have been so if it had weathered it w/o a scratch, but otherwise this statement is just over-memento-ization of anything connected to 9-11.

Most of the damage which is now visible on The Sphere occurred when removing it from the WTC Plaza AFTER the towers came down ...

The Sphere has been moved to the NW corner of Battery Park, just north of Castle Clinton and very near to the Korean War Memorial. It's behind a chain link fence, as that entire area is being redone as part of the overall Battery Park reconstruction. Yesterday, following the recent snow and current warm wave, it was surrounded by a sea of gooey mud.

Scarred ‘Sphere’ Is Moved, but Doesn’t Go Very Far

... a work crew arrived on Wednesday and began dismantling the sculpture, placing one hemisphere on the back of a flatbed truck, and a crew member said that he could not divulge where the “Sphere” was headed ...

... the “Sphere” was simply being moved about 550 feet within the park, to a spot much closer to Castle Clinton, to accommodate the renovations.

By Thursday afternoon, it had been reassembled in its new setting, where a relocated eternal flame was burning. From certain vantages, its battered, jagged form looked like a dystopian version of the Perisphere from the 1939 World’s Fair (http://www.1939nyworldsfair.com/worlds_fair/wf_tour/theme-1.htm), with the new 1 World Trade Center as a silvery Trylon in the distance ...
