I found out this morning that the statue in Rockefeller Center is the greek god Prometheus. I had never given it a second thought before. It was a statue, and it was gold. But it made me wonder... why Prometheus?
Then I started thinking about all the places and things that NY is known for to tourists and others - The Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, etc. And realized, I've never experienced a lot of these places and things first hand.
So I'm curious. Have you actually been to these so-called tourist spots, icons, whatever you want to call them?

You're right. This is true for most new yorkers. I've lived in nyc all my life--almost 23 years--and haven't gone to alot of the tourist's spots here.
For, example, the Times Square New Year's Party. People from all over the world come to be part of that but i have no desire to be part of it. meh

That's because being in Times Square on New Year's Eve is for a New Yorker probably one of the lamest things one can do, that said one would mistake me for a tourist whenever I'm near the Empire State Building, I can't walk by it without looking up.

I've been to pretty much all of them -- almost always when my out-of-town friends visit the city. My New York friends often ask me how I can stand being around tourist sites and tourists so much. The trick is that each time I look at the places and icons from a different viewpoint. Sometimes I pretend that I'm looking at everything for the first time. Often the company of my friends is so good that it doesn't matter to me where we are.
As for Prometheus in Rockefeller Center, it has an inscription taken from play by Aeschylus (Ancient Greek playwright):
"Prometheus, teacher in every art, brought the fire that hath proved to mortals a means to mighty ends."
(That's SO Rockefeller!)

During the years I lived in New York I became a tourist every weekend.
Never exhausted it all.
(Couldn't have if I'd tried.)

I typically have my camera around my neck so I suppose I really do look like a tourist most of the time. I've never been to NYE in Times Square either. I have been to the St. Patrick's Day parade, which is something I'd like to do again. I'm always in the park, or one of the museums.
I've never been to the Intrepid though, or taken a boat tour. That might be interesting.

New Yorkers with cameras around their necks look entirely different from tourists.:D

Never been to Liberty or Ellis Island in all these years. I just rode the Staten Island Ferry for the first time when my mother visited for Christmas. That was fun.

I love the Staten Island ferry. (and they have beer). I try not to take RC for granted because the sculpture really is beautiful - if you see it at an off hour - though I'll admit I mostly go there for Hale & Hearty. I go to the TS Toys R Us regularly on my own, but the best way to see tourist spots is through visitors' eyes.
