I don't know exactly how many people on WNY are from New Zealand, let alone Auckland, but for those of you who don't know the Sky Tower is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere. I thought it deserved its own thread, as I will eventually be making a 3D model of it and I think everyone should know what it is, how it was built etc, so that you can understand the model I will make (which will have a thread as well).

Here's a Virtual Tour [+] (http://www.skycity.co.nz/skycity/index.cfm) of the view from the tower. It's only available in Quicktime, sorry, I copied it from the website.

If anyone has any info I can have it would be much appreciated; I need some info and resources for my model (although I can just visit it as well, but construction facts would be nice).

The little paired rectangles in the ring at top: are those segments of glass floor?

Yes, those rectangles are the glass floors. Here's a pictures of them from inside the tower.

To get this title of "Tallest Tower in the Southern Hemisphere," Sky Tower had to take it away from Sydney Tower by adding a telecommunication mast that was well over 100+ tonne I believe.

Sky Tower architect, C. C. Moller, then went on to Macau a few years later, and built a taller one yet. No more than 30 metres separate the Sydney Tower from the Macau Tower. But of those three towers - Sky Tower in Auckland is to me the most photogenic. In the early morning light, Sky Tower looks at times like a minaret from the Middle East.

The Macau Tower was built by the same company and based on the Sky Tower, because some rich guy (I forget his name) came to Auckland and fell in love with ST.

Compare the two:

I do remember his name, all too well. Actually he goes by several names. His name is usually given as Dr. Stanley Ho, or Stanley Ho for most westerners. But the transliteration of his Asian name is Ho Hung-sun. The two are blended sometimes to get Stanley Ho Hung-sun or Ho Hung-sun (Stanley) in newspaper articles. He is a multi-billionaire and is usually referred to as "The Gambling King" in Macau.

I recalled after your post that the full name of the Macau Tower was Macau Sky Tower. And though I didn't know he had seen the Auckland version, it seems consistent with what I do know. When I was on tour in Macau, a guide said that the tower was designed by Gordon Moller, whereas I listed C. C. Moller for both the Auckland and the Macau Sky Towers. The firm does indeed have the name C. C. Moller, and they were involved in both, but as to the principal designer for both, it may or may not be Gordon Moller.

Interesting. Well, anyway, I think Gordon Moller is German. I asked about him at the Sky Tower information centre, and they just laughed at me and told me to go to Germany.

Very polite people.
