Replace or supplement?

Great selection of pics. Very beautiful.

Its kind of both, they current bridge will apparently close to traffic in 2013 so the new bridge will be there by then, will be a disaster otherwise. but ive not heard it will be destroyed, it may be kept open for light traffic i guess.

Very nice pictures, Alonzo. What a beautiful country.

I am acquainted with a professor at an American university who directs archaeological excavations at Loch Lomond in the summertime. He tells colorful stories about the treasures and perils that are waiting at the "bonnie banks".:D What do you know about that area?

Alonzo-ny
May 20th, 2007, 07:38 AM
download a song called loch lomond by runrig and you'll find out! I havent been to loch lomond for many years, its not far north from Glasgow where i live and i have fauge memories of it as a child and going on the famous boat which gives tours of the loch. Its also a big controversial issue because it is becoming very busy and noisy with watersports which a number of people dont like.

Ah, yes, the prof said that the crowds of watersporters are getting in the way of excavations; trashing the area; and ruining an ecosystem that took millenia to form. Is anything being done to curtail this?

I think they imposed some kind of restrictions, time restrictions or restrict the activities to one part of the loch. Not sure though as i havent heard about it for a while.

Do Scots like Brits?

That a bit like saying do Californians like Americans.

English, Scottish, Welsh, NI's are considered British.

The Scots and English do have a history, however many people in
England are related to people in Scotland, Ireland, Wales etc or
have Scottish, Welsh, Irish ancestory.

Many Scots, English, Welsh and Irish live and work in each others
countries and in the case of England, Wales and Scotland, we
share a small island off Europe.

Btw Scotland dores not have a massive population, of the
UK Countries, England has a population of over 50 million,
Wales 3 million, Scotland 5 million and NI 1.5 million.

Do Scots like Brits?

I think your avatar may have influenced you too much!

I am scottish but also passionately british, there are a good few nationalists in scotland but Im pretty confident we will never go independant and I think many people like the fact they are part of britain but not necessarily being british. Hopefully everyone sees sense and devolves government to england too and then everything should be fine and dandy.

So yes, i like myself.

Don't tell me the Forth Bridge is going anywhere. Its my all-time favorite bridge, structuralism at is most beautiful best.

http://www.panoramio.com/photos/original/52846.jpg

I think I read somewhere that its either the most recognizable structure or the most famous structure of Scotland. Theres no way they could tear it down, structural problems or not, it would be like Brooklyn tearing down the Brooklyn Bridge.

Alonzo-ny
October 1st, 2007, 10:02 PM
The rail bridge is fine (my uncle painted it years ago by the way) but the road bridge is the one thats structurally failing now. Go figure, the 1800s bridge is pretty fine and the 1960s one is screwed.

So Alonzo - i hope in the picture are they firing the cannon for the tourists and not at us Sassenachs:eek:.

Very nice pictures by the way, (and coming from south of the border i like the comment about a devolved English parliament).

By the way, when you say your uncle painted the Forth bridge, do you mean as a picture or the structure itself?

You inspired me last night to download an episode of "Passport to Europe" wherein the destination is Edinburgh. What a great looking place. I have to vsit and walk the Royal Mile. Very impressive.:)

That's a great show.

I like it when Samantha Brown does the gratuitous bikini shots. Ella tiene un culo magnifico!

This is one of my favorites:

Hi, Alonzo.

Great photos.

Edinburgh is not only one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but I think that it's the most beautiful in the UK, in part, due to its magnificent landscape.

Is it considerably colder than London in the winter? How do the property prices compare to London?

Where is this street?

^^^ I agree. I've only had a chance to visit a few times in the 1990s and early 2000s, but it's one of my favorite walkabout cities. It did not suffer heavy bombing during the War, and many beautiful buildings (and their occupants) were spared the fate of so many other British cities. And London wasn't the only city gutted by the bombs: Birmingham, Liverpool, Hull, Sheffield, Belfast, etc., were all heavily damaged. Sadly, many of the city centers of these mid-size cities look depressingly the same. There will be a Boots, an M&S, the requisite fast food chains, etc., all in drab 60s or 70s architecture. I was in both Belfast and Sheffield a few years ago and felt like some streets could be interchanged without anyone noticing. (Some of the Belfast bombings dated to the Troubles, of course.) Edinburgh is a gem. I'm glad it was spared for all our sakes.

Thanks Amigo. Edinburgh is one of the world's best cities in my opinion. The medieval old town and the Georgian new town are both stunning. It has great architecture old and new and is an extremely cultured city. It is also one of the most important financial cities in Europe. The Royal Bank of Scotland and Bank of Scotland are both based there. It is also home to Scotland legal system and the Scottish parliament.

I don't think it is that much different from London. Temperatures across the UK are all in the same range generally. Winters here are milder than NY. Being on the east coast it doesn't get as wet as say Glasgow. Property prices are high. The highest in Scotland and one of the most expensive places outside of London. Edinburgh is the second wealthiest city outside of London after all.

I think I'd like to own a pub in Edinburgh when I retire.

Do you want to be a partner too, NYatKnight? I'm thinking of various theme nights (e.g., contests for girls with the skimpiest thongs, etc.)!

It's really beautiful.

What are the names of some suburban towns within 50 km? I want to look them up on estate agents' websites.

I look forward to the pub, amigo!

The only one that comes to mind is Haddington which is a small town not far from Edinburgh. It a really nice little town but it is right next to the main road to Edinburgh and also to England.

I also found these places from google, though Im not too sure of the areas. Buckstone, Fairmilehead, Swanston.

Check this link. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070806101505AAygHer)
