Subway-like PATH trains run to Hoboken, Jersey City and Newark at less than New York subway fares. New Jersey Transit runs commuter trains out of Penn Station to much of the rest of the state.

ok so How would I go to Jersey City from let's say Chinatown by subways? I go to NYC every summer so I might as well take a day trip to NJ to look around

Are there some places in Jersey City that you'd like to visit?
Or do you want to get an overall idea of what the NJ cities close to NY are like?

Sounds like you want a PATH (http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/) train.

^ quick question-- is there any time you would take a PATH train from one destination in manhattan to another destination in manhattan? is it cheaper than the subway?

It costs $1.50. It's cheaper than a regular $2 subway ride, but the cost is about the same or lower if you have a monthly Metrocard.
And PATH only goes down 6th Avenue and the frequency of service is nowhere near the NYC subway F/V lines.

What is the best way to get from the Upper West Side (Columbia University area) to Fort Lee, NJ by public transportation?
Thanks for your help in advance!

Take the A train to George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal (181st St Station - if you hop on the C or the 1 at first, transfer to the A at 168th St), and then take a NJ Transit Bus or a Spanish Company bus across the bridge - or you can even walk across if you want to.

I recently tried the NY Waterways Ferry from 39th. St. to 14th.St. Hoboken.
Cost $6.00 each way including courtesy bus from and to 42nd. St. and 7th. Avenue.
