I thought some of you big-city New Yorkers should learn a little more about Auckland City!

The CBD is amazingly tiny compared to NYC... anyway, here are some pics.

(We also have the tallest tower in the southern hemisphere... can YOU see it? lol.)

Auckland is developing an extremely attractive skyline. Funny, I never thought I'd ever use the words "Auckland" and "skyline" in the same sentence.:D

Love that Sky Tower! Keep those pictures flowing, flowing, flowing this way!

Auckland's had a goddamn skyline for years...

Ever since the 90s (as far as I can tell...) ever since the Sky Tower was put up, loads of skyscrapers have been put up. In fact, they have some plans for a 200 and something metre tall skyscraper that you can read about in the Kiwiscrapers section on SkyscraperCity... I post there too...

Auckland's had a goddamn skyline for years... :mad:The Sky Tower opened in March, 1997, and for you, that's a lot of years...

But for me... on 3/97, I was already 35 years old. Yep, for the first 35 years of my life, Auckland had the puniest skyline you ever didn't see.:p:D

Fine... be that way...

My lot of years happens to be most of my lot of years... which is most of my life, which is a lot of lots of years (10 years, to put the phrase in to full meaning, which is all about years.. :D)

On... Saturday... yeah, Saturday... Which is one day away (I can count! Woohoo!) I'll go downtown to get some more in-depth pictures of inner Auckland. Mainly I'll focus around Queen Street, which is the main urban street in downtown Auckland, and I'll get some shots of our skyscrapers from street-level. However, most of you New Yorkers will probably laugh at the height of them, they aren't as tall as the NYC ones. But it's all we've got, and I'm proud to call Auckland my home.

That sounds really preachy.

OH, and I'll get some shots of Takapuna. It's quite exciting - although there is about 4 skyscrapers there (with one under construction) I have heard about plans for other skyscrapers to be built in the same area. In the next 10 years I am predicting that there will be quite a nice buildup of skyline in that area, something I am quite looking forward to.

Reminds me a lot of Seattle in the U.S. (mountains, greenery, tower, skyline by the bay). I hope the little historic buildings are kept as the city center develops.

As usual none of the pictures here show on the computer i am using apart from a small box with a red cross.

I've always liked Auckland - I 've got relatives in North shore city, and have been invited to visit but the 24 hour flight puts me off. I was thinking about moving to New Zealand a few years ago, but changed my mind - damp old England for me i'm afraid;). I'll probably visit one day though.

Here are some inner-city shots (dated Saturday the 9th of June). I could have uploaded them earlier, but there were over 200. So I decided to wait.

(These are just the best 20 so far)

I've been meaning to get to New Zealand for years now. I really should just do it. I'm a big art deco fan, so I'll have to get to Napier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napier,_New_Zealand).

Thanks, Joelio, for a glimpse of a place we don't see too often.

Very nice. I'm especially impressed that there seem to be hardly any parking lots.

Have you got any more pictures from the top of the sky tower?

It would be good to see a 360 degree view of Auckland.

Joelio
November 22nd, 2007, 12:46 AM
^^ I don't think I have a full 360 degree view, but you can get one from the sky tower website.

For those who are interested, I uploaded ALL 183 photos from my last sky tower trip onto Sendspace. They're pretty cool. Check them out and tell me what you think :)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/srm0tv

And could someone please change the name of this thread? I'd prefer it was something like "Auckland, New Zealand".

Thanks. :)
