What do you all suggest is the better idea involving a visit to Governors Island?

1. drive my car to Manhattan, park and then get on the ferry to Governors Island?

BUT ...

Where to park? Is a dangerous walk from a parking garage in the area to the Ferry and back?

2. take a Greyhound bus or Amtrak train to New York City and then get to the Ferry but ... which is be the best way ... taxi or subway? How does one transfer to the subway to reach the area near the South Street station or a nearby subway station to pick up the ferry?

Thanks.

Hey Stud-

Let's start with safety in general. New York City, and Manhattan in particular, is the safest large city in this country. Muggings are pretty non-existent, subways are safe and there are no longer any truly "bad" neighborhoods.

The ferry leaves from the beautifully restored Battery Maritime Ferry terminal. It is located just north of Battery Park and the Staten Island Ferry. It is very easily accessibly via R or W trains downtown to Whitehall Ferry stop or via 4 or 5 train to Bowling Green.

I advise against coming into Manhattan via car, although it can be done. When you figure in gas costs, tolls, parking, and general aggravation, it is cheaper to take the train - and you get to relax. The train takes you into Penn Station. From there you can take the 2 or 3 subway down to Wall Street and, if you are up for a short walk, the ferry is a brief walk down Broad Street to the waterfront.

Stay aware that Governor's Island is only accessible via National Park tours and there are only two per day on posted days (and you can't reserve tickets.)

Enjoy

However convoluted it might be to get yourself to Governors Island:

DO IT !!

It's worth any little complications it takes to go there.

Agreed. I cherish my visit to Governors a few years ago. It's a true gem, and definitely worth a visit soon before it is developed.
