Coming upon St. Mark's is like time travel to when New York ended here in the country. New York's most valuable hidden gem. Were you able to get inside?

Unfortunately no, I did not get to go inside.
St. Marks was on my list of places to visit, but on the day in question I was walking around blindly, and rather stupidly, without a map and in the end I accidentally stumbled across it while on my way to Tomkins Square Park . The church first came to my attention in the Sandra Bullock film “Two Weeks Notice”. I had read quite a bit about Peter Stuyvesant and his 60-acre Bouwerie and of course Daniel Tomkins.
Later the same afternoon following my stop for refreshments at McSorely’s, I came across the Peter Cooper monument, who, I am ashamed to say I knew nothing at all about. However on my return home and reading a book called “Old New World” recommended to me by the bar keeper in McSorely’s, (because it contains a whole chapter about this famous watering hole), it turns out that Peter Cooper was a regular customer there. So quite by accident I am led on another learning trail in my quest to know more about New York City.
It really is a wonderful city for keeping you in touch with its history. Just follow the street, avenue, park, and monument names, it never fails.

Brian, if you had not said that you're 70, I would have thought you were a young man. Your sense of adventure, continuing quest for knowledge, and youthful spirit are remarkable. We could all learn a lot from you.:)

Hey, I'm an avid "follower" of NYC! No matter where I live here, in the U.S., I find myself drawn back to the most amazing city in America! My first experience of Manhattan was while in art school in Pennsylvania. That was thirty eight years ago. We were taken to the Whitney and Guggenheim just a few weeks into the first year of school. Once bitten, I've never recovered! I am taking new girlfriend and meeting son and his g/f, from the Catskills, in a few weeks, for a tour of the city! Thanks for your posts.
