Is there any kind of map available that shows the entrances and exits for each subway station, along with an underground map of the station? I don't live in NYC and only go a few times a year but I'd like to be more efficient with where I enter and exit the stations. I'd also like to enter the train so that I don't have so far to walk when I get off at my next stop.

Nope. Not really.

And especially not now with the whole terrorism thing that happend here.

All you have to do is start remembering this stuff yourself! ;)

(PS, try staying in the middle of the train. Most stations will be closer to it, on average, than anywhere else)

Learning which stations have exits at the ends (rather than just at the middle) and thereby which car to ride on so you're near the exit / stairway you want when you arrive at your desired station is one sign that you'er a NYer tried an true.

I drive visitors crazy with that -- "Let's walk down to this end" or "Let's get on the 2nd car" -- but it does keep me moving and minimizes time jammed up on platforms / stairways.

I've never seen such a map in the public domain, unless it was incorporated in construction project documents.

You may be able to gather station information here. (http://www.nycsubway.org/lines/)

Unrelated:

Some may like to view subway lines in a geographically correct layout. (http://www.nycsubway.org/maps/spui.html) This doesn't work well graphically in the limited space of a subway car, but there's a link to a very large map in PNG format on the site.

For rail buffs, there are track layout maps (http://www.nycsubway.org/maps/track.html)

Those used to be on the Web but must have been taken off for security concerns. You can see subway station entrances on this map: http://gis.nyc.gov/doitt/cm/CityMap.htm
