View Full Version : Subleasing dilemma

I’m currently subleasing a studio, the contract that I have is until October 1, guaranteed and then month to month following that. Just today one of my best friends told me that one of his roommates are moving out September 1, so I could take his room. I would rather live with one of my buddies than by myself and the room is about the size of my studio anyway, the lease is longer and the rent is less. I’m just trying to mull my options here; there would be a month’s difference between the earliest move in and the earliest move out of the two places. I’ve never done a sublease before so I’m interested in the legality and my options as far as the contract, its not a lease so I can’t break it which would then make it the landlords legal responsibility to find a tenant to replace me, I’m guessing the same rule doesn’t apply for the tenant whose lease I’m under. Since I have about a month to advertise I’m thinking about cosigning the lease at the new place and then subleasing it for a month, it’s in the UES a huge room for $1,000 a month. I would even take a hit with the rent maybe dropping it to like $700 a month just to get some money in my pocket; my question then becomes how hard is it to sublease a room for just a month on craigslist?

Thanks in Advance.

I would think it's not at all tough; I would check with your new roomies to make sure they're okay with a stranger showing up for a month --

you could also post a notice on a bulletin board at a local business (say, Lenox Hill) and it would probably go.

and don't forget our "moving to New York" thread.
