Hello Everyone,

This is my first post here at the forums. I just stumbled upon this place a few days ago and I can't believe the wealth of information here!

My question is, overall what is the typical thing to do in NYC, buy or rent?

My girlfriend and I are very optimistic on trying to move out there in the next year once I am able to transfer with my current company (they enforce a one year in current position rule before transferring). We would like to get a place in Manhattan preferably. I was looking at some of the real estate prices out there and it seems like there are some decent apartments for sale around the $400,000-$500,000 range. I understand they are not that large in size, which we are already comfortable with as we understand that our money won't buy the same size place in NYC as it would here in Arizona. However, are these places that are listed overall typically in a good area or are only the nice places priced at over $800,000? I know "nice" is a general term and everyone has their own opinion as to what qualifies as "nice", but in general I don't want to live in an area that is high in crime, an older under maintained building, etc. I would prefer to live in a fairly well maintained building with a doorman. Is this possible in Manhattan in the $400,000-$500,000 range?

Or do a large majority of individuals actually rent in Manhattan? Any information and help would of course be greatly appreciated!

Most people in Manhattan rent.

Rent first, learn, then buy. It doesn't make much sense to buy into a city you don't even know yet.
