I especially like the ones that are high up and show the enormity of the place. It's as if all of Brooklyn and Queens looked like Manhattan.

for me, looking down from sky is always a great pleasure.
but no doubt newyork and hongkong are the best skyline of the worldwide.
then tokyo and shanghai.

Actually, I prefer Chicago's skyline to Hong Kong's, but yes, I agree New York has the more beautiful skyline than Shanghai, and that Hong Kong's is also better to look at. A lot of Shanghai buildings use cheap materials, especially the endless apartments, and besides, the buildings are slightly too far apart to make a great skyline. But it always amazes me when I go there how truly gigantic Shanghai's high rise area is. I guess that's what happens when you've got 1.3 billion people.

100% agree with you. but beijing do has much more quality highrises than shanghai.
chicago skyline is more morden than NYC, but aren't that impressive for scale as NYC.

I got the impression on my christmas holiday in Shanghai that construction there has slowed dramatically in the last year. This is especially true in the most luxurious section around the spine of Hui Hua Lu Road, as I feel the rest of the city like the outskirts and of course Pudong are still growing reasonably quickly, though much slower than on my visit last year.

Would you agree Shanghai construction boom has tapered off?

Fantastic pictures - i had no idea Shanghai was so high-rised, much more so than Beijing.

I'm kicking myself now that i didn't visit Shanghai when i was in China - i was advised not to go as i was told there wasn't much to see. Just goes to show i should have followed my instinct and gone anyway.

I'm surprised at the diversity of the architecture - some of the shots could have been taken in Europe.

shanghai cerntainly has a lot to see( if we dont mention beijing), in old district, every villa worth a stand and watch, those villas built 80 years ago, and famous people ever lived there. that's the most attractive character when i visit shanghai.

you are right!
i am not a shanghainese, just live a small city near shanghai:D ,but recently a few years, i find shanghai building construction has slowed down ,that's obvisly. but shanghai goverment put more and more money each year to infrustructure: world's largest scale subway system (shanghai will has 13 metro lines after 6-7 years),longest ocean bridge in the world etc.
the reason building construction slowed down: domonlish old house has to pay much more money that 1990s, central goverment cool down economy(more difficult borrow money from bank),etc.

The old parts look interesting. The new parts look duller than Dubai.

that pano is amazing. Ive heard Shanghai had 2000 highrises as of 5 years ago, anyone got more up to date stats? (or what they mean by highrise? Ive heard its a 300 ft cut off limit)

Regarding the comparison to Dubai, although the Pudong skyscraper area lacks some of the hussle and bustle it needs to thrive (but its under construction so that may change), most of the Puxi side is very exciting within the inner ring road, including new areas like near the railway station.

In fact, a complaint I have about Shanghai is the new areas on the Puxi side are so busy and vibrant at street level that it becomes unpleasant - motorcycles swerving past pedestrians adjacent to 8 lane impassable highways creates a walking environment that doesn't always work in a pleasant way. Insanely busy and thriving - yes. But even as a New Yorker, I found myself longing for a bit of tranquility walking around the new parts of Shanghai. If you visit, stroll around the Chang Shou road near the railways and I think you'll see my point.
