Hi everyone, i'm a newbee to this forum and completely crazy about NY since more than 15 years (so ages ago).
It looks like i finally found a nice forum about NY with some decent people and, of course, alot of beautiful pictures....( just forget about the NYtimes forum which really sucks).....
Let me introduce myself: xavier, 32 y old, married, working for Vodaphone as It specialist.
This year (and for the third time in a row) i participated to the green card lottery as i only have one dream in my life LIVE AND WORK IN NY, you know the story.
Man, it's so hard to find a good (means well payed) job out there....

Welcome aboard!
I basically found this site, because like the proverbial salmon, I'm hankering to come home. I was born in the Bronx. Ever since we moved from New York, the wanderlust has never left me.
Currently, rusticating in Hurricane Ivan disaster country, Pensacola, Florida. It's been quite a whirlwind, so to speak. :) I've lived in SF as well, and always thought I'd choose a hurricane over an earthquake any day of the week. Now, I'm not so sure.
Peace!

I feel you on this hurricane crap! I am originally from central P.A. moved to Tampa a little over a year ago. Charlie missed me, Frances hit me, Jeanne i don't remember, but Ivan was my favorite. I went to New York for the weekend and ended up being stuck there for two extra days because no flights were going into TIA.
I think it is safe to say that I was lucky to have no damage from any of the hurricanes. Actually, I never even lost power. You guys up there got hit bad. I feel for you.

cats think it's okay to bite your big sister when you feel like it.

There are a lot of stories about how NY got the nickname Big Apple.
It was popularized in the 1930s by jazz musicians, who referred to a gig in NY as the Big Apple.
In the 1920s, a reporter named John Fitzgerald wrote a horseracing column for the New York Morning Telegraph called "Around the Big Apple." In 1924, FitzGerald wrote that he first heard the term used by stable hands in New Orleans. The goal of horse trainers and jockeys was to race at the NY tracks - the Big Apple.
NY govt now accepts this version as official. The corner of W 54th St & Broadway, FitzGerald's home for 30 years, is called "Big Apple Corner."
Forward this message to your cat, as she seems to be in complete control of your life.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you all know I've recently joined the forum. I've been following it for several months now and am very excited to witness the new developments in NYC. I'm living at Duke University right now, but my home is in Jersey, about an hour from the city. I went to high school in Manhattan, and grew up in Queens, so I still think I'm a New Yorker and I'm proud of it. I can't wait until I'm older when I can live there full time. By then it'll probably be a totally different city. Anyway, looking forward to more exciting news. See ya!

Hello,
Ninja Mantis here, your newest member.
I was watching a program on WLIW and there was a thing about wild Parrots in New York, in Brooklyn to be precise. It was a short clip and left me hungry to know more about these wild Parrots in my city.
I did a search on the web and wella...discovered your site.
Weird, huh?
Anyway...soon as I registered and logged on, one of the first names I see is a Ninja Hedge...I had to laugh. Can the world handle two ninjas on the same site?:)
Anyway, I'm a big boxing fan and post on lots of boxing forums. I was impressed with the quality of threads at this site and plan to come here and contribute my thoughts to the discourse here. It seems like a nice cozy site.

Welcome to the board.
I actually caught sght of the parrots in Central Park about 9 years ago. Very interestng. They were very noisy. The think I found most interesting was that, where most birds will flutter upward if upset while perched in a tree, these birds came barreling downward. Very strange. They were fascinating to watch.
Brooklyn gets great birds year round, but especially, it seems, in Winter. I put feed out on my fire escape and get all sorts.

So I was hoping to share my love with some peeps here (dont worry, I am only as half depressed as I sound...haha :)
I have been to NY a lot of times, studied there, got to know it pretty intense due to my hanging out with NY friends and I just loved it. So meeting new Peeps esp. New Yorkers is always a plus. Thanks for the few minutes :)... peace out.

Just thought I'd take a second to introduce myself. I've lived in Manhattan for the last 6 years (renting) and my husband and I are taking the plunge and have just started the process on buying a place. I'm overwhelmed at the information on this site and forum (had known about the site for a while but not really tuned into the forums).
We're going to be looking for a 2BR/2BA condo (not co-op) that's at least 1200sq feet. Not that you need to know my life story, but I wanted to say thanks in advance for the wealth of information on here and I'll do my best to chime in when I might have information or advice to add!

But unfortunately i don´t got any idea how to become a "membership" :) to this great town. But actually i want to say hello to all you people around there and wish a nice day.

Hello. I'm Gregory. Gregory Tenenbaum.
I live in a midtown Y. It's close to everything midtown.
I work about anywhere between 4-12 hours each week, practising law. Just when established clients and friends need things done, I sort of have a closed practice. I like to call it being "semi-retired". Because there is more to life than one's profession.
Like Badminton. It's my passion. And what a game it is. What other game can you run the equivalent of 5 miles without leaving the court? And no problems with epicondylitis like "T*****". Hmpp, what is that anyway? I think its a game for peeps who like fluffy balls. Enough said. Myself, I prefer feathers on my 'cock.
Today I got a pm from another member with a smiley face. What is that for? I understood what you said, there's NO NEED to PUT A FRIKKIN MONSTROSITY of a CARTOON in your MESSAGE.
I do like cartoons, Captain Caveman and Scooby Doo are, uh , were my favourites. About 30 years ago. But mum and dad didn't let me watch much TV actually.
So, are there any really "Bad" Badminton players here?
And any Bad players who have a 'Blad? That way, we could have "Bad with Blad" days out, oh yeah. The Blad outing this morning was way cool, thanks everyone.

Was hoping for asset/investment management but no connections alas nor is my resume or academic record stellar. Applied everywhere I could think off.
My little dream is having 8 or 10 blocks in manhattan with 4-6k residential units more or less lux appt buldings with retail on first 2-4 floors... (Slightly insane but hey who isn't).
Also I am a registered republican who thinks drugs should be legalized and was very happy when bush won :) . You can thank my socialist-communist professors. Althought I probably would have voted that way anyways.

I dont mind abortion my mom works in an abortion clinic. She votes

are presented at school and the tax thing. Basicly which nudges that you
should be taxed a little more for this and a little more for that and if you
dont agree your a stingy sob.

Hi there,
First of all, i´ve have to excuse myself for my bad english.
My name is Coen. I live in The Netherlands, Europe.
I'm a 26 year old graphic designer (art academy) at a local firm that produces design lighting for office buildings, public buildings, and people with lots of money.
I design advertisements, brochures, products etc. etc.
It´s very nice here, it´s a nice country, nice people, nice bars and disco´s, nice goverment, nice laws etc. etc.
Nevertheless, I´m looking for some contact abroad. (outside europe)
Don't ask me why cause I don't know.
I'm just curious I guess. I've seen many parts of Europe in my life but have never been outside of Europe ever. (never flown in a commercial airplane, even)
I Got this crazy idea to come to New York some day. Together with my sister. Just a couple of days. Being a pure tourist.
I will come, only I've got to save some money first.
But at first I'd like some advice about visiting the US.
Movies here are showing mass of crime and victory in the us. Crime is high, 'living large' is high. From tv here in holland we get a very ' one-sided' image of the US. MTV, Oprah, ER, CSI, Bush, Spiderman, etc etc.
What I'm realy looking for is some kind of pen-friend from the US that can tell me about his/hers country, vision, interests etc. Some person who is interested in exchanging information about his/hers domestic escapades etc.
If you are such a person (serious) please mail me.

As a broke student/ex-student thats(sic) more or less [having] monopoly dreams, you're probably not paying enough taxes to justify opening your mouth to complain about them. Why not read the page in your Republican/Conservative Manifesto that calls for irresponsible free-loaders like you, who are doing nothing for our country and economy to take a position of responsibility. Or, perhaps you'd rather the Liberal/Democrat philosophy of cutting tuition, if not offering all-out free tuition to State Universities. Ah, nevermind, that kind of socialist-communist stuff wouldn't appeal to you. Unemployment and whining seem to fit you fine.
Pleasure to meet you. Welcome to the forum. ;)

I am not complaining, I am merely stating my motivations for supporting Reps/Bush other then dems. I understand that only your opinion should count
and everyone who thinks otherwise is a fool or a retard.
I do not have to list 5 things he did. That is not why I voted for him.
I voted for him to prevent Kerry winning, and puting the shakles
of Canadian style health system at the expense of jacking up taxes all
around. Other things why, is basicly I think he is a more jovial person
whos not as angry when someone disagrees with him. Basicly I view Bush
as a happy go lucky guy who doesn't look down at people. While Kerry is
the exact opposite (In my view at least) those are my reasons.
And I don't think drugs being legalized will occur anytime soon no matter who gets elected.

Jovial? Yep, laughing all the way to Armageddon ...
So what if your f***ing taxes aren't jacked up when the dimwit has elevated the deficit -- which will "shakle" this country for generations to come -- to historic and dangerous levels.
And for what?

Side note: Back in the ice age -- when it came across the wires that Kruschev was out as the leader of the then-USSR -- the news announcement came over our school intercom system and my entire classroom exploded with cheers (being the well-indoctrinated Cold War kiddies that we were). However our very smart teacher (the great Mr. Finch) quickly quelled our glee by pointing out that the devil we know is often better than the devil we don't know...

Cardinal Winning(RIP) lead the way with his prayers and the special Mass he did.
I just want to ask, been talkin with friends here. What's the situation with one that hit the Pentagon? We're havin a game of cards here, but also deep conversation.
We see many programs about the bereaved familiesof victims, and also the heroics of the NYFD and NYPD.
Why do we never hear anything about the Pentagon victims or families?
What's going on? Don't these people deserve to be remembered too? And where were the wings of that plane anyway?

Also, since there is wide speculation that the Pentagon was hit
by a missile or unmanned drone rather than a commercial aircraft, you would not have a lot of civilian family members pressing for a "public memorial." The silence surround that "attack" is at least interesting, if not disturbing.

Exactly. Both those places are urban and have their own distinct culture --different from mainstream American suburban culture, which offers nothing of interest to a visitor. Go all the way to Key West, which is a place to be.
They both have beaches, but beaches you can get anywhere, including England.
Now the muscles you'll see on those Florida beaches: those you have to go to Florida for. Don't get confused: remember, that's Miami Beach, not Miami, which is humdrum. Two different places, physically close but worlds apart.
Forget Orlando. Canned thrills are no match for the real ones you'll find in Miami Beach and Key West.

Yeah, I don´t know if i will post much, but I´m sure that I will read much, and so I think it would be good if envisage myself.
My name is Matthias and I´m from a small town in Germany ---> Northrhine-Westphalia ---> Ruhr-Area. The name of the city is Herten and there are about 65.000 inhabitants...gigantic, I know. ;)
My hobbies are videogames, watching movies, listening to music , reading books, meeting friends, sports...and of course I´m a big fan of NYC.
I love the whole USA, but i like NYC the most, although I´ve never been there. :/
I hope that I will have the money to visit this great city when start my professional studies in september.
After reading so many books (with big pictures! :D) guide books about New York City i need to visit it, I AM SO HOT!!! :D
If you have any questions, just aks me, maybe I will anser you. ;)
Mh, I hope that someone will read and anser, so I can say I 'know' somebody from New York, hehe. *g*

Welcome aboard, Laharl
Do you have any pictures of your hometown? Small things like the butcher or the place you go to swim or where you go to get away ... normal things. Of course, if you have castles or palaces nearby we always like to see those, too ;)
Methinks one day you will get to visit NYC ........

At first: A big sorry for all the spelling mistakes. I would like to type as fast as in a German board, and then mistakes like missing words or 'anser' happen...my English is soooo bad... *g*
Ok, here you can find some pictures of my homecity, but of course they only show the nice places like the park with the castle or the village with the old houses. But believe me, there are many ugly places. *g*
http://www.herten.de/stadtinfo/sehenswert/index.htm
Mh, here are some more pictures of Herten:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herten
Maybe I can take some photos of my city, after completing school I have much time til 9/1.^^ (<--- in Europe/Germany its different, the first of September isn´t 9/1, but 1/9. I hope that iI will not disorganice any dates...)
But don´t expect too much, Herten is a small, minor city. But hey, we have the talles sun dial in Europe!! :D

No worries about the debates. I'm used to them (I like to debate). :) And I know not everyone will agree with me (even though I'm always right...Haha!).
And I noticed all the men. Woohoo! :p The other forums I frequent are like, 90% women. So this is a nice change. Most of my friends are guys. :) But I plan to stay around. I have tons of questions about whether or not NYC is right for me. But I want to read the sticky thread about that first before asking. I only have like, 50 pages of it to go. Haha.
BTW - Do you think this board might be upgraded to the newest form of VBulliten any time soon? Just curious! Not a big deal. :)

Hello everybody.I just joined the forum.
I love New York!
My first time ever being in New York City, was in October of 1992.And I wasn't disappointed. My group of friends I went with stayed at the Leo House on Ninth Avenue in Manhatten.Though we mostly stayed in Manhatten,we rode the subway trains a lot.One day we took a subway to the Bronx Zoo.I love how the roads of Manhatten glitter. We even went to the top of the Empire State Building.Occasionally I saw brownstone buildings that looked remarkabley like Sesame Street. But that's not surprising seeing as Sesame Street is made in New York.About my only complaint was how crazy the cab drivers drive.
I would love to actually see the other boroughs of New York,Queens,Brooklyn and Staten Island, someday.
