Here's an amazing little known but surprising story, (or at least, it was to me!). Perhaps our American friends are already aware of it.

It's a great story, and as a fan of the American Revoultion I admit I did know about it. But my guess is most people probably don't know or have forgotten the details of his successes beyond the victory over the Serapis. We all learned in early elementary school of the hero John Paul Jones who bravely said "I have not yet begun to fight" in reply to a British officer's surrender request. Others may also know him as the father of the American navy.

Thanks for posting it, I really had never thought of it from the British perspective.

I've never heard about this - how interesting! Especially this;

a second landed on the Old Quay slip from which they "proceeded to Nicholas Allison’s, a public house on the Old Quay’’ where "they made very free with the liquors etc''.
