Visiting NYC Xmas/New year

Hi all - my partner and me are visiting at the end of the year and will be there for new years. We had planned to go to Times Sq. just so that we could say we'd done it but having read around the web it doesn't seem like such a hot prospect. We had thought of going to a party in a club but we're not really into discos, more rock music. Any alternative suggestions from you clued-in native New Yorkers would be very welcome.

Also (sorry) we've been to NYC a couple times before and have done the main tourist spots (Liberty, Empire State etc.). Any suggestions for more obscure/ unusual attractions?
