And welcome back, Comelade.

Fulton landing - like the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, like the top of the Kosciusco Bridge and the Weehaken promenade - has one of these too good to be true awesome views of NYC. The only issue of concern is that from that angle the new Gerhy tower will block most of the Woolworth--so it better be good...

Thanks for the pic comelade. ;)

Coney Island is grim. Why doesn't Disney get a hold of it and Disneyfy it? If Times Square, why not Coney Island?

How do you Disnefy looming brown projects (the biggest and gloomiest problem I see in the picture)?
And with the beach empty and everything shuttered (like in that picture), it would look grim even if they painted everything dayglo.
I don't think Disney is what the place needs, in fact a big Mickey Mouse in Coney would make me want to puke. I would consider that the worst outcome. I would much rather see a variety of development that doesn't put just one giant corporation in control over the whole place. Even more offensive would be the standardized and unoriginal attractions they would probably cover in licensed character artwork. Yuck. Same ol', same ol'; see it anywhere.
Do you really think that's the best solution?

Do you really think that's the best solution?
Not the best, certainly. And it wasn't the best for Times Square either.

But it might be the best possible --again as perhaps in Times Square-- given the inevitable NIMBYs and puritans.

Here's a non-Disney Pipedream Scenario (for Coney Island only): Global warming brings Coney Island a Floridian climate. That makes it a year-round destination.

The MTA runs jetfoils to Coney Island from Manhattan and other destinations, while upgrading subway service with the latest trains at enhanced headways.

Cirque du Soleil sets up a permanent venue here, along with its competitor Spiegel Tent and a couple of permanent burlesque theatres. A few strip joints join the mix. Evening cabarets complete the picture.

Several of the world's best carnival operators set up a dazzling kaleidoscope of competing thrill rides, shooting galleries and bumper cars. No fewer than four diverse roller coasters, a refurbished Wonder Wheel and a reopened Parachute Jump.

Sword-swallowers, fire-eaters, contortionists, acrobats and jugglers move into subsidized quarters in the grim high-rises, now given Albanian paint jobs.

Twenty-seat, twin-rotor helicopters depart regularly for Manhattan circuits.

Four-star restaurants with table cloths jostle for business with Stroop Waffle stands and Gyro. Funnel cakes, bratwurst, even Bismarck herring vie for your gastronomic dollars.

A big tent with wheels of fortune is leased to a different church every day of the year for bets not to exceed one dollar.

A thousand-seat theatre hosts beauty pageants, muscle shows, traveling acrobatic shows, Chinese opera, Indian movies, talent shows and installments of American Idol.

Speedboats are available for hire on calm days, along with water skis.

The newl-built state-of-the-art aquarium features dolphin and seal shows, wading with dolphins, and a world's first: trained acrobatic penguins!!

A half-dozen hotels spring up, from budget to ultra-luxury. They subsidize direct helicopter service to JFK, LGA and EWR and Manhattan, both scheduled and on-demand. Thrice-daily round-trip seaplane service links Coney Island with the Hamptons.

Tattoo parlors, body piercing, hair tinting establishment alternate with designer clothing and jewelry.

At the glass-roofed market structure, Thursdays are for stamps and coins, Fridays for used books, music, prints and artwork, Saturdays for serious antiques and collectibles, Sundays for crafts, retro clothing and funky antiques.

Licensed pedicabs operate on the Boardwalk --now extended by an additional third of a mile.

Secure dressing rooms, deck chairs, umbrellas, beachballs, volleyballs and nets may be rented by the hour.

Is that enough, or should I go on ... ?

Now you're talking!
I nominate ablarc for Coney Island Development Czar.

Aside from the above, I pictured some modernism by adding video game play (like they do in vegas????), when they come out with the newest games in 3d, etc.

Why stop there? How about ten-cent slot machines?

How about a zoning regulation requiring all signs to be genuine neon instead of backlit plastic? Times Square may have lost most of its neon; Coney Island can now pick up the slack.

(Btw, the Coney Island discussion is seriously off-topic in this thread. Should a moderator move it where it belongs?)

Cool pans. Especially like the one from Rock Center.
