I know we have lots of excellent photographers amongst the members here on WNY.

Has anyone seen a copy of photographer William Kleins book "New York"?

Used copies are for sale on Amazon for beween $240 and $400.

A used copy of a signed first edition will cost $1800, also on Amazon.

Obviously the book is in demand. I wonder is this valuation caused by the rarity of the book, or the quality of the photographs.

Lofter had posted a a couple of photo's a while back but I could not access them.

Do photography books have 2nd editions? I think not, hence the price.

I think you are right. Why would you have a second edition of a photography book?

I think booksellers like to use First Edition to justify the price.

The distinction in the price examples I gave was more to do with the fact that they were signed.

My question remains. Has anyone seen, or do they own a copy?
I would like to know what they think of the book.

Why a First Edition?
- almost all book collectors are only interested in the First Edition and First Printing (first/first) of a title because it is the first state that the book becomes available in and it will be more difficult to come by as time goes on (many first edition printings are in smaller quantities than subsequent printings). This is especially true when there are many more reprints/editions of the book in publication/circulation. A fine example would be...
...a 1st/1st of Terry Pratchett's 'The Colour of Magic' can fetch up to £5,000 a copy, but you cannot buy these in the usual high street book stores...
... instead you will be offered a later printing at the cover price (currently round £14).

I bought a copy about 10 years ago (here in Italy) when it first came out. I gave it as a Christmas gift... and a wonderful gift it was.

The cover, with it's big bold red&black graphic, also works as an nice visual touch for the home.

Thanks for that Fabrizio.
