It would be helpful to know if you plan to drive, or use mass transit.

i'll be using mass transit
I planned the trip with nj transit. I said it would take about 2 hours.

You will take NJ transit into Penn Station, then you will take the subway north.
Though you could theoretically save yourself about seven minutes by walking to the orange line trains, specifically the "F," I am a big advocate of taking "whatever train comes."
So I would just take the blue line train local -- the "C" or the "E" from Penn Station.
The "E" is your best train -- it will take you to Seventh Avenue and 53rd, and you can walk from there.
The "C" will take you to Columbus Circle -- Eighth and 59th -- and you can walk from there. Stay on the very back of the train, so you get off at the 57th-58th street stairway.
Any way you slice it, it will be about half an hour on the subway.

I'd be surprised if it takes you two hours, but I suppose anything is possible. A test run would be a good idea I would think. You can make the best of it too and walk around the City a bit and have breakfast or something.
