What is the best form for an entry system to a lobby entrance door for mahnattan?

What technology have you seen? What works the best, is the safest, and is easiest to use?

is video necessary? do you need an intercom - or is calling a cell phone good enough? does the elevator also need an buzz type system? or just the front door?

Thanks.

For residential building an intercom (the type that also buzzes open the door) is required by code.

I'd imagine it costs probably a bit more money, but a friend of mine lives in a building with an RFID (tap-and-go) system linked with the lobby door and elevator. It's very quick and easy since he can leave his RFID card in his wallet without having the fumble with keys to get in the lobby.

I think so much depends on who is in the building and who wants to come in. If I remember correctly you're asking about a small commercial building, so I would have key cylinders in the elevator that lock off each floor -- pretty standard in converted Tribeca lofts and in smaller commercial buildings in say, Chelsea.

The advantage of those is that when a tenant moves out, you can just change the cylinder for their floor.

For the front, a video cam is good if there is someone there to monitor it. I just brought clients to see 211 west 18th -- which is an elliman listing -- and the residents inside the building can move the camera a bit with their keypads, so they can kind of "look around" -- I thought that was a nice feature.
