My wife and I are looking at going to nyc in december of 2008. I am looking for advice on hotels that will not completely break the bank. I do realize nyc hotels are expensive and am not looking to cut corners to save a lot of money. I'm mainly looking for advice on hotels that are within walking distance of most anything that is worth doing. we have pondered the possibility of maybe somehting in a residential area due to the fact we are foodies and have heard that the best restaurants are in the residential areas. Probably hotels that are no more than 300-400 a night or around that price range. Any advice and ideas are great. thanks

I'm know I'm not a New Yorker and all, but I've been recently looking at the following hotels for my solo-July trip to the city. The first is very cheap, and will probably be where I will end up, because I'm a high school student and ... poor. :D
- Hotel St. James (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d290978-Reviews-Hotel_St_James-New_York_City_New_York.html)
- Best Western President Hotel (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d75711-Reviews-Best_Western_President_Hotel-New_York_City_New_York.html)- I'm not a big fan of the Best Western hotels, but then again, I'm not going to NYC to spend time in a hotel. It all matters on where the hotel is located in my opinion! :)
Hope this helps a bit!
Ben

sjohnson4382, also take a look at this thread. ZippyTheChimp put together (quite a while ago) a list of 10 cheap hotels under $250/night.
