This thread will feature pics of NYC in the 1970's. Please add pics if you have any.
First off are b/w's from the 1977 blackout. Anyone remember that? I was just a little kid. Many here probably weren't even born yet.

I keep thinkign "Taxi Driver" and "Mean Streets" but I'm sure there was a lot of fun and just ordinary life too, obviously. I'd love to have a time machine and visit New York over a week skipping a decade each day... Say start in 1925, then 1935, 1945 and so on... Maybe visit Times Square, Wall Street, some Mid-Town hotel and Central Park, just to get the zeitgeist

Kids, scroll up to the shot of TimesSquare. That's 46th looking up toward 47th. Note the garbage and the grimey, falling-down look of everthing... quite a different scene today.
( "I Love My Wife" and "Bubbling Brown Sugar" place the year to be 1977 )

Sorry if someone else pointed this out, but that guy in the middle has to be John Lennon. I'd notice him anywhere. He lived in NYC during the 70's, and loved it.

Thank god the 70's was only 1 decade. This was perhaps the worst period in the history of the city. With its economic deficit and soaring crime rates and extreme poverty, this was certainly a time where no one would come and visit. So much has changed since then.

You know guys, you really have to rethink things a bit.
People came to NYC in the 70's. They came because they truly loved the theatre, art, music. NYC was very rarified... it had nothing to do with Viking kitchen appliances. Among all of that decay was genuine art movements and gosh, to think that B'way had Bob Fosse, Michael Bennet, there was Joe Papp downtown, Sondheim was still writing new musicals, we still had Warhol, Woody Allen was doing films about NYC, you had young artists making a mark on society like Haring, Basquit. The Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass ...Max's Kansas City, CBGB's... Studio 54...Halston was a genuine force in fashion...you still had Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, and Paul Taylor....Tama Janowitz, Spalding Gray, Eric Bogosian and on and on... a lot of this continued into the 1980's... but today?
Who and what compares?

Besides decay and crime... NY was also portrayed this way:

What is funny to me is that 30 years ago, those people would have been heckled. People would have thrown things at them. It looks like an old SaturdayNightLive parody. NYC.... the Village... did not attract the kind of people who would stand on line for a friggin' cupcake. Thank you very much. You went down there in search of other things...
Be that as it may, I will agree that NYC is a better city now. It could not have gone on as it was in the 1970's. And when murders are hovering at around 2,000 a year... well that speaks for itself.
BUT you can't deny that there was much more genuine creativity in the city back then. And that counts for a lot. Priorities were different. NYC still had a very special place on the cultural scene.

It still amazes me that the subways used to look that bad. From what I could tell in March, they have cleaned them up dramatically. Of course, we were only on the 2, 3 trains. Are they all cleaned up or do some still have graffiti like the picture above?
lofter1
June 21st, 2008, 01:35 AM
All the subways are very cleaned up now -- especially considering what they were like in the 70s.
Understand that almost every subway station in Manhattan has been refurbished since back then: new platforms, new tiles, new lighting, new audio systems (not to mention the new electronic turnstiles + metrocards).
The subway was really ragged back then -- and so f*'ing noisy. None of this smooth and quiet stuff we have now.
Plus you could walk between the cars, which was handy -- and open the doors for ventilation in the summer when the heat was unbearable (no AC back then either).
All in all riding the subway back then was a great + nasty experience.
NYC4Life
June 21st, 2008, 02:09 AM
The subways have been cleaned up from grafitti, but scratchitti (carving of windows with sharp objects) and acid etching (tagging windows with acid) have taken over where grafitti left off. The whole subway system in general however; are much more cleaner and modern compared to the 70's and 80's.

Does anyone here know what happened to those buildings? I assume they aren't there anymore. I'd like to know some of the history but I haven't been able to find any info. The NYTimes only has two wedding announcements and a short food review from the 1980s mentioning the Ferrybank. :(

Hello friend. Those buildings are still there. The Ferrybank building is very nice inside. Last time I was inside, there was a nightclub/bar. Still true to its original use, happily.:)

Hello MidtownGuy:
It's nice to know that those buildings still exist; but, for some reason, I'm disappointed that the Ferrybank is still a restaurant. I was hoping it would be a dusty bookstore or a luthier (violinmaker). That's just what I imagined (hoped) it would be when I looked at the photo. Does that make any sense? :o
I searched by the address to get current info. about Ferrybank - it goes by a different name now. I also found current photos & the exterior looks very cleaned-up. This also depressed me for some reason.
Unfortunately, I could not find any info. about Tavern under the Bridge. I guess it's probably also a trendy, pristine hangout as well (?)
But one day I'd like to visit those buildings and take my own photographs. (BTW, I'm using that photo as my screen backdrop. I hope that's not illegal!) ;)

Terrorist’s Release Reopens Wound of Unsolved Bombing

A BOMB’S AFTERMATH On Dec. 29, 1975, a bomb exploded at La Guardia Airport, killing 11. No arrest, or credible claim of responsibility, was ever made.
By AL BAKER (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/al_baker/index.html?inline=nyt-per)
Published: August 9, 2008
It was four days after Christmas in 1975 when the powerful bomb blew up at 6:33 p.m. in a baggage area in La Guardia Airport’s main terminal, which was jammed with holiday travelers. The bomb — equivalent to 25 sticks of dynamite — shattered plate glass windows 30 feet high, spraying glass shards like shrapnel, and hurled metal from shattered baggage carousels and coin-operated lockers.
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/08/10/nyregion/10laguardia3.190.jpg
Zvonko Busic, left, in 1976, when he helped hijack a plane and plant a bomb.
Amid the smoke and debris, 11 people lay dead; 75 others were wounded.
It was the worst death toll from a bomb explosion in New York City since a bomb went off in a parked horse-drawn wagon on Wall Street in 1920, killing more than three dozen people and injuring hundreds. It drew condemnation from Pope Paul VI, local politicians and President Gerald R. Ford (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/f/gerald_rudolph_jr_ford/index.html?inline=nyt-per).
There were no credible claims of responsibility. No arrests were ever made. And though it remains one of the bloodiest, most puzzling chapters in the history of American terrorism, it has faded from public consciousness.
“It remains unsolved and almost forgotten — except by those whose loved ones were killed or maimed,” said Terence G. McTigue, a former supervisor in the Police Department’s bomb squad, who was among the first members of the force at the scene.
For those haunted victims, and for a cadre of investigators who were involved in some way in the La Guardia case, a kind of fresh pain and frustration has taken hold in recent weeks — a result of what might otherwise have seemed an unrelated event.
Late last month, Zvonko Busic, who had spent the last three decades in United States prisons, was quietly granted parole and — within days — flew back to his native Croatia, a free man.
It turns out that Mr. Busic, a self-proclaimed Croatian independence fighter who was imprisoned for his role in another 1970s terrorist attack, had been the object of suspicion of many of those who looked into the La Guardia bombing. They included Mr. McTigue and Edwin T. Dreher, who, as a deputy police chief at the time, was put in charge of solving the case as the city’s No. 1 police priority.
There was also Frank McDarby, a detective who interrogated Mr. Busic in an F.B.I. (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/f/federal_bureau_of_investigation/index.html?inline=nyt-org) office 33 years ago; the crime writer Kevin F. McMurray, who spoke with Mr. Busic for three hours in 1997 in a visitors’ room at the federal penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pa.; and Robert K. Tanenbaum, a former prosecutor from the Manhattan district attorney’s office who had nagging doubts about Mr. Busic.
Each, to some degree, had been intrigued — and even tormented — by the unsettled matter of whether Mr. Busic had played a role in the La Guardia bombing. Each, over the last two weeks, has peered back into history and wondered anew if Mr. Busic escaped punishment for one of the biggest unsolved terrorist acts in the nation.
“There is a lot of suspicion that he was involved,” Mr. Tanenbaum said.
“There was definitely conversation about that, at that time.”
He added: “It’s an unsolved case. It was a major atrocity. And I’ve always been concerned about this.”
Over the years, Mr. Busic, who is now 62, has maintained his innocence in the La Guardia bombing. He reiterated that in a statement read on Friday by his lawyer, Marc D. Blackman of Portland, Ore., in which he said he and his wife, Julienne, “to this day, have absolutely no knowledge about who did” it.
The couple, now living in a small town on the Croatian coast, was convicted of playing a role in the hijacking of a Trans World Airlines jet and, as part of the same operation, for planting a bomb in Grand Central Terminal in September 1976, 10 months after the La Guardia bombing.
That bomb killed a city police officer as he tried to defuse it at a Bronx demolition range.
“Rumors that Julie or I had something to do with the La Guardia bombing have haunted us for over 30 years,” Mr. Busic said in his statement. He added: “We would welcome a process that would allow us to put these unsupported and reckless rumors to rest once and for all. But we are only two people with no power to convene such a process. Should those with such power do so, we would fully cooperate, as I said long ago when contacted by law enforcement officials.”
Regarding his release, Mr. Busic said, “It is inconceivable to me that I would have been granted parole if there was any evidence linking me to that horrible crime. There is no way to prove a negative, of course, but I believe that my release on parole comes as close to doing that as one can get.”
A Stone-Cold Mystery
The La Guardia case — known to law enforcement officials as Lagbomb — remains an “open homicide” investigation, a police official said. It has long been eclipsed by modern acts of terrorism, including the Sept. 11 attacks, whose masterminds are well known. Unofficially, it is a stone-cold whodunit for the F.B.I. and the Police Department.

Ten months after the La Guardia bombing, Terence G. McTigue was injured by a bomb linked to Zvonko Busic, a Croatian separatist.
But 33 years ago, after the bomb went off in a baggage area used jointly by T.W.A. and Delta Air Lines, it was an intense inquiry for hundreds of law enforcement officers and other personnel.
Investigators scanned passenger manifests from flights preceding the blast. They analyzed bits of fabric, parts of timepieces and other forensic clues. They tracked down two men seen running from the blast, then questioned and cleared them. They looked at the Palestine Liberation Organization (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/p/palestine_liberation_organization/index.html?inline=nyt-org) because Golda Meir, the former prime minister of Israel, had been in New York. They heard a Minneapolis police chief’s tip about a bomber in his state — but it was a dead end.
“When this happened, we got calls from all over the world,” said Mr. Dreher, the former deputy police chief. “It was just a madhouse in the beginning.”
The La Guardia bombing reinforced the notion that the city was a stage for groups seeking attention for international causes. For instance, on Jan. 24, 1975, a bomb went off at Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan, killing four people. It was one of 49 bombings attributed to the Armed Forces of National Liberation, a Puerto Rican nationalist group known as the F.A.L.N., between 1974 and 1977.
The Croatian nationalist movement linked émigrés from Croatia in several parts of the globe, all of them aiming to free their home from Communist Yugoslavia.
“They were involved in multiple bombings in New York,” said Neil Herman, a retired F.B.I. agent who was a supervisor in the local Joint Terrorism Task Force.
It was not until Mr. Busic was arrested for the 1976 hijacking and Grand Central bombing — and returned to New York after his capture in Paris — that he became someone of interest to investigators still stymied in the La Guardia case.
Questioning a Suspect
Once in New York, Mr. Busic began to meet the people who would come to be gripped for decades by their suspicions about him.
Mr. Tanenbaum was a prosecutor in Robert M. Morgenthau (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/m/robert_m_morgenthau/index.html?inline=nyt-per)’s office, a senior member of its homicide bureau. He prosecuted self-proclaimed members of the Black Liberation Army for the killing of two police officers, as well as members of the Colombo crime family.
Mr. McTigue, a sergeant assigned to the police bomb squad in 1976, was blinded in the left eye and lost two fingers of his left hand in the explosion of the bomb planted in Grand Central. When it detonated at the bomb squad demolition range hours later, Mr. McTigue recalled, “I got hit right in the face.”
He was 41 at the time, a police officer since 1956. He got the Medal of Honor. He said he spent three months in a hospital and a decade getting “patched up — I lost count of my operations at 17. Tracheotomy. Skin grafts. The whole deal.”
Mr. McDarby, an investigator who had kept his beard from his time working narcotics operations, went to the F.B.I.’s New York offices on the night Mr. Busic was flown back from Europe.
Recalling the interrogation, Mr. McDarby, 67, said that Mr. Busic drew a picture of the bomb planted in Grand Central, but said he “did not mean for anyone to get hurt or killed.” Calling himself “the commandant,” Mr. Busic recounted how he got the ingredients for the bomb, built it with dynamite and tested it with a “lamp switch in his apartment” in Manhattan.
“After all that was said and done, he had to go to the bathroom and we had a minute break,” Mr. McDarby said. “Eddie Dreher was there and he said, ‘Get back in there with him and talk to him. You know what I want.’ He was referring to La Guardia.”
As the interrogation continued, Mr. McDarby said “inconsistencies” arose. Mr. Busic began to sweat profusely. He first said he had heard about the bombing from someone at his apartment, then said he had learned of it from repeated radio news alerts during his taxi ride home.
“I said, ‘Wait a minute, you told me a half-hour ago that the neighbor told you,’ ” said Mr. McDarby. “He said, ‘Oh, I am tired, I have not slept in four or five days.’ His lips were quivering.”
The interview was interrupted by a federal agent, who claimed he had to rush to get Mr. Busic before a federal judge, and it was never finished, Mr. McDarby said. He said the agent threatened to arrest Mr. McDarby and others if they did not release Mr. Busic; Mr. McDarby said he believes the threat arose from a turf dispute.
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/08/10/nyregion/10laguardia2.large.jpgEddie Hausner/The New York Times
Investigators spent New Year’s Eve 1975 sifting through debris from the La Guardia explosion, the last of several bombings in New York that year.
Years later, Mr. McDarby met one night at Elaine’s (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/e/elaines/index.html?inline=nyt-org), an Upper East Side restaurant, with Charles E. Rose, a prosecutor with the United States attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York. Mr. Rose wanted to take a fresh look at the case, Mr. McDarby said, but it never happened and Mr. Rose joined a private practice in 1994 and died four years later.
Mr. Tanenbaum, 65, interviewed Mr. Busic as part of his investigation of the hijacking and the subsequent Grand Central bombing. But he also believes that interference by the federal authorities — who ultimately charged and prosecuted Mr. Busic and others in the 1976 case — prevented any real chance to explore Mr. Busic’s possible role in the La Guardia bombing.
Today, he wishes that a state case against Mr. Busic and his comrades had been pushed.
“We know there’s a likelihood that some of Busic’s accomplices would have talked about the La Guardia bombing case, that we might have learned more about the La Guardia bombing case,” Mr. Tanenbaum said.
A Similar Pattern
Mr. McMurray, the crime writer who developed an interest in Mr. Busic, corresponded with Mr. Busic and his wife. And then he got a chance to interview him in 1997.
Mr. Busic again denied a role in the La Guardia bombing. He told Mr. McMurray, 58, that he would take a lie-detector test to prove his innocence because “he believed he was still in prison because they held him on suspicion of being the La Guardia bomber.” Mr. Busic served more than 31 years of a life term and was granted parole and deported on July 24.
Mr. McTigue, 73, who lives in Rockland County, followed Mr. Busic’s path through prison for three decades. And he was always struck by the similarities in the two bombings.
“Both bombs were in a public locker in a transportation facility, a few days after a holiday, and both were large and heavy,” Mr. McTigue said. He noted that both devices utilized dynamite and “a 9-volt battery, possibly for a lantern.”
Mr. McTigue testified several times before the United States Parole Commission in federal prisons where Mr. Busic was held, in California, Maryland, New York and three times in Lewisburg, Pa.
He did it, he said, “to make people aware of the crime he committed and also, on several occasions, to point out what I felt was his solid connection to the La Guardia incident.” Mr. McTigue said he hoped the La Guardia case would be solved.
Now, Mr. Busic is “wandering around Europe somewhere,” with his wife, according to his father-in-law, who spoke by telephone from his home in Portland but declined to provide his name. He said he was tired of the subject of his son-in-law’s suspicion in the La Guardia bombing.
“They like to dredge that up,” he said. “I don’t care what they think. If they think he did it, prove it.”
Mr. McTigue notes that a condition of Mr. Busic’s parole is that he not return to the United States.
“I’m sad that he’s out of our hands,” Mr. McTigue said. “Eleven people lost loved ones, and scores of people were injured, and no one has ever been brought to justice. That’s a terrible mark on our society and it should never be forgotten.”

There are some awesome photos, i just cant imagine what it was like in the 70's, i guess that the song by the Philadelpia international all Stars " Clean it up" http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSW9RfeXHWs pretty much sums up the city at the time.
Its fascinating, and shows what a turnaround has happened, it only adds to the coolness of New York though imo!

^ It would've been nice to see the twin towers with ones own eyes when they where built. I think they should have rebuilt them the same way shape and size except to get rid of the peephole windows and replace them with modern glass ones.

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.
1970. Italy/West Germany.
Written and directed by Dario Argento
1970. Italy/West Germany. 97 min. Written and directed by Dario Argento.
With Tony Musante, Eva Renzi. Argento's directorial debut is a masterpiece
of suspense, as famous for its voluptuous and symbolic use of color
(unforgettable shades of red and yellow) and music (a brilliant score by
Ennio Morricone) as it is for its blend of surreal violence, mystery, and
eroticism. Set in a modernist Rome drawn entirely from Argento's uncanny
imagination, and evoking a sense of urban alienation through shadow and
reflections, the film centers on an American writer who witnesses a brutal
assault and must uncover the identity of the assailant to prove his own
innocence. Preserved by Cineteca Nazionale, Rome. In Italian; English subtitles.

The city had a different, exciting kind of charm back then...well into the 80's. That said, beneath the veneer, it was also a bit sleazy. I remember wandering into some of those Broadway dives with friends in the mid-late 80's back when we were curious and newly legal. There were some characters in there.

That said, beneath the veneer, it was also a bit sleazy.

^Well, not that there's anything wrong with that:p
Every now and then I'll come across some pics that I just love. These are from Tony Redhead/Flickr, though I adjusted the contrast & exposure to minimize haze. These are all from 1979.

Cooper Square. Check out the gas prices; almost 30 years later we're nearing those prices again. I paid $1.67 in Virginia a few days ago.

A few others, not sure of the exact location.
Sixth Avenue, where Houston becomes Bedford Street, looking east (SoHo on the right, Greenwich Village on the left) ...

Lafayette Street at Great Jones ...

Maybe Stanton or Rivington Street near Chrystie looking east towards Allen Street ...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3014/3048316313_80c285c0bb_o.jpg
The north edge of SoHo, where Wooster meets Houston, looking south -- with the AT&T Building at 32 Sixth Avenue looming across Canal Street beyond the end of Wooster (where the new Kaufman Sheraton Hotel is now rising) and, of course, the two twins ...

I think I did mention the Flickr poster, but you can find the originals HERE (http://www.flickr.com/photos/56277154@N00/sets/72157607846002831/). I adjusted the contrast for this board and hosted them privately, so you would not find those posted here with a search.

Ah, indeed you did, sorry, I only looked at the last page of the thread .
Your obvious interest in NYC in past times is a boon to this forum and I for one really appreciate your efforts, thanks Radiohead.

Love to see the city in the 1970's. So gritty and dirty yet, full of character.

On WOR, Jean Shepherd often kept me awake with tales of his childhood. (The Real player option is not working for me???, Rt click the MP3 option and save it to your desk top).... & Enjoy the memories. :) YA GOTTA LISTEN TO: " It's the anniversary of the "Great crash of 29" and Shep sings "The Bear Missed the Train" From 10/29/1974 ..... It is SO relevant to this thread and our current times.
^ Complete with commercials!!!!
It's the anniversary of the "Great Crash Of '29" and Shep sings, "The Bear Missed The Train"

back atcha' 195...awesome, ain't it? They can't possibly know that I'm transported back to those days while I'm podcasting on the Seventh Ave. Express.
Caught Shep live, musta been 1974 or so when he did an annual show at Princeton. None of my friends at the time could appreciate Shep like I did. Make sure you listen to his Kerouac tribute show from when he died in 1969.
I'm sure you have, but if you haven't....

Copy on the Kerouac. I'll do that tonight at work.
I met Shep when he was on his book tour for "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories".
It was at a small book store, I think in Chatham. It was summertime, hot as hell, the place had no air conditioning. Poor Shep was sweating like a pig. I walk up to meet him and he stands up from his seat, leans over the table, and rubs his sweaty head on my sweaty head!
I was speechless! I had just rubbed sweaty heads with Shep!!!! What more could a 7 year old kid want! :D
PS I was not aware of Bergmann's book. Up to now, my memories of Shep are mostly from my childhood. His radio and PBS shows being the main venues.
The book is now on my list.
