View Full Version : Moving to a new server

March 17th, 2008, 06:04 PM
In the next day or two I am going to move Wired New York to a new server. I will stop the forum before the move. The site would have a new IP address so there could be several hours downtime while the IP propagates. The forum might be closed up to 24 hrs. I will provide updates in this thread.

Woo! Finally ... thanks for the info. Edward.

The move to the new server was complete at around 5:30pm today. Let me know if you experience any problems with the new server.

March 18th, 2008, 05:57 PM
It does seem faster. No lag.

I agree with Fabrizio. The new server seems to be very fast for Iowa. :p

I'm having a problem....
I can be going through the new threads but,
by the time I get half way through, I start getting
that message telling me the server is being moved again.
When I click on the new address to continue browsing,
all I see are older posts.
If I change websites and then come back to wired,
the problem seems to fix itself.
This keeps happening again and, again?

I can be going through the new threads but, by the time I get half way through, I start getting that message telling me the server is being moved again.Does this happen all by itself, or when you click a WNY bookmark on your browser?

The bookmark may still point to the old forum main page, which is now the page with the message about the server change.

March 19th, 2008, 05:49 PM
Does this happen all by itself...Yes- I can actually be on the site for quite a while, reading through 10 or more posts when all of a sudden....
I get the message and have to log back on.

March 19th, 2008, 05:55 PM
Is your browser set for "scripts allowed"for the new site?

March 19th, 2008, 06:19 PM
There was a small misconfiguration in the DNS records, which I corrected. Is this still happening?

March 19th, 2008, 06:20 PM
NO....it seems to have stopped...Thank YOU!!!:D

March 19th, 2008, 06:37 PM
( I was hoping with this server change, Lofter wouldn't be able to find us... but it looks like he's back )

March 19th, 2008, 06:47 PM
Yeah, so much for the "most spied upon" UK.

Anyway, the new server is so fast, I pulled a hamstring.

March 19th, 2008, 08:38 PM
:p I'm not that easy to ditch

March 20th, 2008, 07:43 AM
You missed so much here: a sex scandal, runaway schemes, jughandles. I nearly got banned for retouching photos while posting. It's been crazy.

So are you now speaking with an English accent and being obnoxious?

We want pictures.

We want pictures.
I agree.

March 20th, 2008, 09:30 AM
Plus we had a big accident in midtown -

March 20th, 2008, 09:38 AM
Alas, I took not my camera.

Thanks for all the "welcome back" greetings ...

And at the risk of writing "off-topic" (although I guess I could go on about a silly contretemps with a certain waitress in Leeds which might more precisely fall under the rubric of "moving to a new server") I will continue this discussion HERE (http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/showpost.php?p=221279&postcount=115).

Back on topic, did the site just have a server burp or was it just me?

I'm having some problems connecting to the forum recently. My connection is lost and like other times, every other site works but this one. However, it's certainly not as bad as the last time when I had to use a proxy in order to access the site.

Any ideas?

March 30th, 2008, 06:09 PM
The site wasnt working at all for me earlier (all other sites working fine) and now is painfully slow.

March 30th, 2008, 07:29 PM
Same as Alonzo

March 30th, 2008, 11:10 PM
If it keeps up, send a PM to Edward.

Working quite well now.

March 31st, 2008, 01:13 AM
The problem started at around 11:20 am. It seems that there was too much load on the server. Then by 11pm the problem went away.

March 31st, 2008, 01:58 AM
After your last post Edward, past Midnight, I have still experienced moments of profound slowdown (even when users are at a minimum). I don't have, of course, your perspective - only the relative difference I note at this off-peak time, comparing this site to other high-traffic sites I customarily visit.

But I won't have any anxiety as of yet. Perhaps my take is isolated, and not part of a re-emergent pattern.

March 31st, 2008, 04:02 AM
I'ts OK again this morning.

But, that really was slow, it took me five minutes to change threads.

Had to give up in the end.

March 31st, 2008, 08:55 AM
The site is very slow again, started playing up at about 13.50 UK time.

March 31st, 2008, 09:29 AM
It's happening to me as well.

March 31st, 2008, 11:37 AM
La meme chose pour moi.

March 31st, 2008, 11:50 AM
slow as molasses and really aggravating when trying to post ...

other than that -- life is perfect:cool:

March 31st, 2008, 01:31 PM
It's v. slow here too -- like talking to someone on a satellite phone, you listen to what they have to say and then wait a couple of minutes before you can reply.

Thanks for trying to make our life better though.

Wow...it only took fifteen minutes for this screen to not time out......
So much for the speed (speed, what speed),of the "new server"......
Oh the pain :(

March 31st, 2008, 05:13 PM
It is zippy now, but this morning it seemed very laggy. I thought it was the office traffic at fault, but I guess something is logging in hits on the server.

It would be good to track the IP's of all these hits and see if this site is simply being phished after its migration. I have not seen many, if any, spammage posts recently, but that does not mean none were attempted, filtered or deleted.....

Just curious.....

March 31st, 2008, 06:37 PM
Some virus or worm infected the server and was sending out spam messages, putting a huge load on the server and making everything slow. This was fixed by 4:40pm today.

March 31st, 2008, 06:44 PM
Thanks for the update Edward.

April 1st, 2008, 04:02 AM
Full speed ahead...

Thank you Edward.

The site/forum are running quite smoothly again. :)
