This is a warning to anyone planning to stay at Columbus Studios on upper west side. DONT DO IT!!!
Its the worst place ever. The info they have up on the booking websites is completely untrue. The rooms are terrible and so amall you are lucky to be able to fit your bags. Far from subway, electric problems that are really bad, horrible service, I could go one.
I spoke to a number of guests ther, no one had anything good to say about the place.
Spend your money somewhere else!!

Very good that you posted this to save some travelers a lot of grief. What a shame people are scamming like that. Sorry your experience was bad, I hope you managed to enjoy other things while in New York.:(

It's almost funny. There are a few "good" reviews, but it's like 20-1 against.
At the hostel's webpage, there's a button labelled REVIEWS, but it points directly to a reservation form. :)

I found these, which were funny to read but not to experience, I'm sure:
"...the linens I had were with some brown stains on them. There was hair on the sheets when we got in our room. The celing had crack in it, and the smells was one of the worst things."
"Photos shown of a sunny clean room is misleading. One of the bathrooms had electrical cord coming out of the shower wall area..."
"...it's a shelter for homeless people. smell of cat urine, dirty walls, dirty stinky carpets on the floors, no furniture, no curtains, no heating in the rooms, bathrooms look as if they survived nuclear war."
"There is no TV, no AC, and the room is hosed down in paint to cover up all the cracks and leaks, they paint over everything..."
:D:eek:

Well hey, the chocolates at the Plaza Athenee aren't that great either...
"For the price I paid to stay on New York's Upper West Side, I was surprised it wasn't worse. The room smelled like armpits and years of filth, but there weren't any creepy-crawlies, and I found the staff to be most gracious and helpful. I could have done without the blood-stained mattress and the (actual) chunk of poop on my bedspread, but I didn't expect the Hilton.
Overall, in a pinch (or if I couldn't afford better, as was the case this time) I would stay there again. They were quite happy to give me new bedspreads when I reported the poop."

This is gross! This hotel could pass as sister hotel for the Hotel Carter (http://wirednewyork.com/forum/showthread.php?p=219085#post219085), another disgusting hotel in NYC.

I know the pictures make it look nice and clean, which may not be true, but at least they bill themselves as a hostel. What do you generally expect from a hostel? I expect so little that I don't bother (if I can't afford a clean room with a personal bathroom, I can't afford the trip), but that's just me.

Isn't there a base standard for Hostels though?
No poop on the bedspread?
I can (flinchingly) understand a blood stain so long as it has been through the washer in the meantime. But some of teh things mentioned seem almost sub-human....
I guess when you house a bunch of peopel that don't care, it is hard to keep things up unless it was designed in an industrial/penal sort of way/motif. (Cinderblock wall, solid metal fixtures including toilets, etc).

The Columbus Studios place is an illegal hotel- the place is supposed to be run as an SRO for city residents.
