FREE!
You probably don't hear that word much, but there are lots of places in Brooklyn (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Brooklyn) where you can pay next to nothing - or nothing - and be entertained.
• Let's begin with free fireworks. Starting June 20, you'll find them at Astroland on the Boardwalk at Coney Island (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Coney+Island), continuing through Aug. 31, except for July 4. Visit Special Events at www.astroland.com (http://www.astroland.com) or call (718) 372-0275.
• If you work in downtown Brooklyn (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Downtown+Brooklyn) or happen to be in the area on Thursdays, grab some lunch and enjoy the music at the 2008 Brooklyn Academy of Music Rhythm and Blues Festival (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Brooklyn+Academy+of+Music+Rhythm+and+Blues+Festiva l), on the lawn on MetroTech Commons. This Thursday's noontime concert will feature Otis Clay (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Otis+Clay) ("Trying to Live My Life Without You") and Ryan Shaw (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Ryan+Shaw), a member of the cast of Tyler Perry (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Tyler+Perry)'s "I Know I've Been Changed." Richie Havens (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Richie+Havens) will close the series on Aug. 7. Visit www.bam.org (http://www.bam.org) for a full list of performers.
• Also on Thursday, Isaac Hayes (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Isaac+Hayes), the soul man who brought us "Theme From Shaft," launches the Celebrate Brooklyn! summer series at the Prospect Park (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Prospect+Park) Bandshell. There's a suggested donation of $3 at the gate for all performances, except special benefit concerts on July 9 and 15. Celebrate Brooklyn! continues through Aug. 9, ending with the Bill Withers (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Bill+Withers) Project. All performers are listed at www.briconline.org/celebrate/2008season.asp (http://www.briconline.org/celebrate/2008season.asp) or call (718) 855-7882.
