View Full Version : Our Man in London

June 17th, 2008, 09:25 PM
A city's character is conveyed by its buildings and people. We see a lot of building pictures on Wired New York, but not so many of people.

This is especially true of London, from which Ambassador Nick regales us with a tsunami of slick renderings. For those suffering from building overload, here's an antidote...

OUR MAN IN LONDON

The man is Ray Pettit, and he's an even better photographer than MidtownGuy (and that's saying a lot).

When most of us walk down the avenue, we see a street scene. Ray sees a hundred photo opportunities. He sees them in his head, then he points his camera and sends them to his memory chip.

Most of us find the gems when sifting through the downloads; Ray knows they're there because --like Cartier-Bresson-- he saw them entire before he tripped the shutter.

His specialty is the telling moment. Those are everywhere around us. It takes a tuned sensibility to see how pregnant with them the city actually is. And it takes a willingness to invade people's privacy --and sometimes get the finger in reward.

Wonder if he was ever slugged?

At once Weegee and Kertesz, and Brassai and the great Henri --with a little Hopper thrown in for good measure, Ray Pettit is the wizard of digital color photography. He can be found on pbase, but here's a hefty selection of my faves --all taken in the streets of London.

The boldface titles are Pettit's.

For you and I
Have a guardian angel on high,
With nothin' to do.
But to give to you and to give to me,
Love forever true.
Love forever true.

I Heard it Through the Grapevine.
Let the poets pipe of love
in their childish way,
I know every type of love
Better far than they.
If you want the thrill of love,
I've been through the mill of love;
Old love, new love
Every love but true love

WOW. Magnificent. Stupendous. Everything stopped for this thread!
The photographer has brought me to London and back.

Ablarc you are right on, we could use more photos with people on Wired. Your thread on Miami is a notable exception. I want to incorporate more people into my photos and this thread is a true inspiration, something lofty to which I will aspire.:o It will help me work on my bashfullness which sometimes holds me back.

Interesting. Some places, I've seen a million times and then somebody shows you a different version of them.

Just one niggle, Ablarc; I assume it was tongue-in-cheek but why so many (older?) people labelled as "boring white people"?
