Call me old fashioned, but the new stuff that came online with the recent upgrade (partially described HERE (http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17883) ) confuses me ...

Of particular note is the "Notification" feature http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/images/icons/icon13.gif, which seems to simply copy and complicate the "Private Message" http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif feature. The PM thing was easy to follow http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif and messages could be tracked and responded to http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif without this or that or the other.

I find the "Notification" thing a mess.

Henceforth I will ignore anything that comes by way of a "Notification", no matter who sends it.

Ergo: If you want to contact me then please send me a PM ...

ps: Not meaning to be rude  , but I haven't replied or activated anything to do with "friend requests", and don't intend to. Nothing personal. Call me lazy :o .

BR, you'll always be my friend.

But for real, not in some online way

After all, we planted a tree together. http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

Re: Nofications > "Friends"

Someone please fill me in on the penchant for online "friends" ...

I find the feature to be worse than a return to the 7th grade because here you have to actively choose to accept or "reject" the request from the friend-seeker --you can't just ignore (otherwise the request just sits there and the "Your Notifications: 1" at the upper right continually guilt-trips you that someone claims they want to be ignored as a potential friend).

In the real world friendships develop over time due to shared experiences. And, anyway, aren't we all "friends" here?

Perhaps it just comes with the territory but on a forum such as this I see no need or value in the teen-ish "friends" feature. And please note that, while it is nothing personal, requests for same directed to this poster will be coldly ignored / rejected.

Love ya all, but not that way ;)

RE: Friends/Contacts.

I call the "friends" feature my "contacts" list (see pull-down menu: "add infoshare to your list of Contacts"). The terminology is not too (IMHO) important, I find it is useful feature because there are over 17,000 members here at Wiredny: and growing. I am currently using it simply as a list of members who have been visiting/posting on the same threads that I do: sort of an affinity group listing.

There are so many threads/members now, this function will become more relevant with time; as membership grows this function will also be a very helpful tool for locating those members who share similar interests and who enjoy visiting/posting in the same threads.

I guess this subject could be a thread itself, it would be interesting to learn what "criteria" people here are using to build their list of "contacts".

Any suggestions on how to make better use of the contacts/friends function would be appreciated.

Cheers
Paul

p.s. As a rule, I see no point in adding mods/admin to my contact list.
