It's Timbit time: After last week's announcement from fast food chain Riese Restaurants that it would convert its Dunkin Donuts franchises into Tim Hortons locations (http://gothamist.com/2009/07/09/tim_hortons_to_open_thirteen_ny_sto_2.php), there were collective cheers from Canadians (and those familiar with the mostly north-of-the-border chain) and a little confusion from DD devotees (http://gothamist.com/2009/07/11/is_the_logic_behind_the_donut_wars_1.php). According to a press release (http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/July2009/13/c5628.html), nine of its ten Manhattan locations are opening today; two others are opening in Brooklyn (full list of locations after the jump). Tim Hortons considers its new NYC presence in its cap and wants to take the Big Apple by storm; COO David Clanachan said, "New Yorkers are savvy customers, they understand good value and quality. We are focused on earning the loyalty of New Yorkers and adding them to the millions of people who make Tim Hortons their daily stop for breakfast, lunch and snack times."
Tim Hortons has been giving out free coffee (http://gothamist.com/2009/07/10/tim_hortons_arrival_pits_timbits_vs.php) since 6 a.m. this morning at one of its three Penn Station locations (the one by the north end of the LIRR concourse). Have you gone to one yet? Share your thoughts in comments and share photos by tagging them "gothamist" on Flickr or send them to tips(at)gothamist(dot)com. And is it a coincidence that Pat Kiernan isn't at NY1 today (http://twitter.com/patkiernan/status/2612654278)?

Thanks! Loved Tim Horton's when I lived in Ottawa. Soups are great . . . esp. on a cold winter's day. This is a step up for the Reisen collection.

They're a great place to pop in for a quick inexpensive meal, better than the typical fast food joint.

DD has never really been true in the city.

I still remember going to places in the 'burbs where the donuts just came off the cooing racks in the back. A nice hot apple cinamon doughnut was great (if not just a plain powdered or cinamon donut!!!)

Now? They get them delivered and you never know what will be there and how long it has been sitting. Their sandwiches suck, and the Riese name has tried to cram everything it can into as small a space as possible (31 flavors, KFC, Taco Bell!!) and they just don't jive.

I hope this prompst DD to drop Riese (if it can) and start opening up some real donut places again.
