Isolated

http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/469/dscf5532o.jpg

No noisy neighbours to trouble you now
Save the cry of a thousand seabirds
Or the roar of waves on the rocks below
Televison reception not great with no lecky
Can't get a delivery of oil for, love nor money
That paper boy just refuses to come around
Going for the groceries can be a bit of a pain
Rowing ashore and humping them up those steps
But that homely smell of furf slowly burning
Or the sunlight seeping though the tiny window
Make this a cosy little place away from the rest

Sitting breathless I look accross the valley
Dark greens and browns with a dash of bare rock
Mountain bog to poor to produce a crop of food
Land that grass would struggle to grow upon
Cliff dangerously close I'm saved by the gale
Rushing noisily pushing all back from the edge
Wild Atlantic winds that have raced unchallanged
Pushed shyward by the rising stark dark land
Modern engineering dares to face the gales down
Standing elegant like poising grey clad models
Swiping blades, cutting each blast, over and over
They turn and face the beast emotionless
Capturing the gale's power silently
Warming the turfless homes in the valley
Turf cutters spade hangs rusting unused

Climbing the broken tarmac path shaded from the sun
New boots stabbing my ankles with each painful step
Only the faintest breath of breeze to cool my face
Light and shade with a thousand tones of green
Song birds sing their songs hidden from any gaze
Squirrels feast on the swelled nuts still on the branch
Peace in this sanctary far from the buzz and noise
Light at the end of the tunnel of green draws me on

What unseen hand has carved these grains of sand
Gently stroking their neighbours slowly away
Carefully creating this hidden work of art
Knowing just how far to push the boundry
No gallery will ever capture this beauty
No speculator will invest a fortune to hold it
No art critic will every wax lyrical or scorn
It is there for all to see if they choose to look
Open their eyes and wonder at it all around
Free admission and no bull to listen to http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/7940/summer08125.jpg

Crisp clear skies bathe us in weak sunshine with no heat
Wet sand pounded hard by winterís grey waves
Bodies well wrapped shield us from the icy breeze
Some visit safely cocooned in their cars
They fail to hear the beauty all around them
Song birds hidden in the waving grass dunes
Sea birds swooping down from rocky nests
Peace disturbed by the racket from a bared engine
Clung from taught fabric, propeller, cables and struts
Rich boy swoops low to show off his new toy
Does he know the beauty here to be had for freehttp://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4281/94012885.jpg

Skimming over peaceful waters set on fire by the setting sun
Amber sparkles from every ripple over the glassy surface
Riders hold on tight hoping not to hit a hidden hazzard
Spray in their faces adding to their thrilling excitement
Thankfully far enough away not to be heard roaring
Just the sound of the waves lapping the shore fill the air http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4416/june2009064medium.jpg

Calm silver sun setting over the deep waters
Reflection on the dark water almost blinding
Peaceful tranquillity in the still evening air
Birds getting the last few bites before bed
Gentle breeze chilling as it comes ashore
Mist clinging to the reed beds slowly soaking
Cotton clouds in blue sky getting ever cooler
Restful nights sleep could be on the cards

Sitting silently at peace in the beautiful Lisnagar
Soft sunlight kisses the freshly sprouted green leaves
Welcoming them into this secret sheltered paradise
I lay back on the fallen trunk and gaze up at the rays
Passing gently through the growing green canopy
Bringing the hope of life to the dormant seeds blow
My breathing eases and my ears focus on the sound
A hidden choir joins me from the wood all around
Each singer trying to outdo their feather neighbour
I close my eyes and just peacefully enjoy their harmony
Movement over the crispy carpet gives me a start
A flash of red fur tinted with silver zips by
The secret keepers of Lisnagar show themsleves
Winter coats fading from pointed ears and fluffy tail
How honoured I am to be accepted in their kingdom
The shaded peaceful wood of Lisnagarhttp://img164.imageshack.us/img164/9029/dscf3927small.jpg

Breeze has clouds drifting along
Breaking into cotton wool balls
Blue haze lit by setting sun
Dropping after a hard days work
Baking bathers now driving home
Leaving the beach in solitary peace
Soft water gently lapping ashore
Wetting sand leaving it shimmer
Ripples tracking the soft surface
Cleaning away the dropped ice cream
Sandwich now coated and crunchy
Odd sock and forgotten favourite toy
Silver road as clean as a whistle
Sparkling and moving as it flows
Preparing for tomorrows throng

You would have been their last view of Ireland
Rugged razor rocks climbing vertical from the sea
Harsh and uncaring you stand boldly there
How many emigrants watched as they sailed away
Starving souls driven from their precious land
Crammed into Coffin Ships to cross the Atlantic
What a memory to take to their promised land (http://img4.imageshack.us/i/barrysphotos050.jpg/)

Midges nip and bite at ever inch of bared skin
Sweat draws them in like burly for sharks
Sodden turf sucks at the boots on my feet
Trying to drag me under it's chocolate face
Sweet heather blossom scents the pure air
It's course twigs cut into my aching limbs
Light green moss hides booby trap within
Beware the walker who thinks it's easy

Gerry,
Thanks for the tour. You are obviously one who pauses to smell the roses. Seems so rare these days..... a relic, you may be.

Invisible seed that float on the still Autumn air
Bursting into life when all else starts to fade
Feeding on the decay laying all around
Glowing like small light bulbs in the dark wood
Sticky and damp while still growing strong
Nature's parachute with the lines below
Ready to cast open and spread your life

Days growing steadily shorter with each passing week
Long dark nights creeping closer like a prowling tiger
Their bite the crisp frost that silently kills the weak
Stripping foliage from every tree in the forrest
Sending birds fleeing to their far away winter homes
Bare cliffs coated in white no place for nesting now
Beautiful to stand and view from inside the warmth
Spare a thought for those not as fortunate as you

Black bassalt standing guard against crashing water
Giant waves constantly probing, looking for weakness
Barnacles cling for life in every nook and crack
Crystal blue waters morph to snow white on crashing
Constrast of vivid colours steels my vision
Soothing sounds ring around with every movement
Fresh salty air fills and cleanses my lungs
Rolling thunder, crash, hiss quietly slowly away
I close my eyes and the sound surrounds my soul
Letting me drift to a warmer shore far away

Greeted with a welcome like a long lost friend
Embraced by the homeliness all around you
A house steeped in the history of Ireland
But greater in the history of the world
US Marines who lived there during darker times
Presidents who enjoyed the comfort given
Guests from all nations just welcomed the same
Feed only the best and delivered with perfection
My every wish answered by a joyful staff
Sitting in the luxury of this beautiful home
Surround by antiques and comfort supreme
A view from my bedroom window inspiring
An artist's pallet of colours grace the tree line
Beech Hill is truly a special place for all

A picture taken from our bedroom window in the Beech Hill Hotel in Derry. My Dad worked for the US Marines during WWII when they used the Beech Hill as a base. A truely beautiful place.

Giant wheel turning by the steady trickle of cascading water
Every full cup dragging the heavy cast iron monster forward
Splashing water sending ripples across the deep dark pond
Moss covered stones testimony to the many passing years
Imagine back many years to different times, troubled times
Laying on the grassy bank listening to this soothing sound
US Marines resting in preparation for the battle facing them
Young men so far from home nervous, but hiding it well
Normandy beaches won't deliver this perfect peace
Many will never return but those that do will never forget
Forget the living hell they would battle through
Nor forget the peaceful welcome still here at Beech Hill

Sitting in silence surveying the world
Thinking thoughts of loved ones lost
Lives cut short as part of some plan
Whispering whine of the broad blades
Steady rythme in the mountain breeze
Slice approaching creeping clouds
Silence allows good memories to rise
Gaze at the beauty in the valley below
Live to honour those no longer here

For hundreds of years all the hill was good for was grazing sheep or cutting turf.
Now the farmers harness the power of the wind.

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/7637/dscf6744.jpg (http://img91.imageshack.us/i/dscf6744.jpg/)

Exposed and desolate, battered by the Atlantic winds
Hardy grass, rushs, moss and heather coat the thin turf
Planters banished the poor to the tops of the hills
Homes no more than holes between the rugged boulders
Land only fit to graze nimble footed sheep or goats
Foreign trees coated some slopes to make a pound
Destroying any chance of our nature to thrive there
Their black gold being savaged by the gluttonous
Poor man's mountains now offering a hope for the future
Giant monsters have their blades slice the clouds
Pulling out the hidden power man seeks far away
Luxury homes now be built with the power man's quid
How the tables have been slowly turned

Ageless dark stones hewn from the earth's heart
Battlements forged with man's blood and sweat
Purely defences or a sign of power and suppression
Redundant jail turret stand high for everyone to see
Ireland's troubled past displayed in these cold stones
But hope for her future springs and nearby grows
The young oak stand in a row to give us all heart
The symbol of our ancient city our Oak Grove

Towering fortification standing tall and menacing
Rock upon rock designed to repel all attackers
Windows shaped for the archers long bows
Ramparts with sharp steep impossible climb
Wise souls avoided it's menacing defences
Invaders though they could never be defeated
But time has now slowly leads an assault
Ivy roots seeping into every gaping crack
Moss growing on the damp exposed stones
Ice and frost weakening the crumbling mortar
Walls blasted by winter's gale crashing down
Invaders now long gone their castle will follow

Still waters disguise a leathal secret
Tiny boats bob gently in the breeze
Elegant heron stalks muddy shallows
Sloping meadow meets the blue water
Cops of trees shadows shade the bank
Homes face this beautiful vista
What a wonderful way to close a day
Watch a sunset over peaceful water

I haven't been to Fermanagh but as my mother comes from Co Clare and my wife from Co Cork so we tend to head west when we go over, not forgetting fly-over weekend trips to Dublin of course. We went to Belfast for the first time the year before last, very impressed by the friendliness of the people and so interesting to see the place after the events of 'the troubles'.
