Times Square billboard to display nation's most wanted criminals

Some of the nation's most wanted criminals are going to see their names in lights on Broadway.

The FBI will unveil a massive Times Square billboard today that's short on movie stars in tighty whiteys and long on bad guys.

The digital billboard near the TKTS booth at 47th St. and Broadway will feature a rotating display of New York fugitives and a number for an FBI tips hotline.

"We're going to make some bad guys famous in Times Square," said Special Agent Richard Kalko. "Hopefully, we'll get some of them in handcuffs, too."

The billboard on one of the city's most crowded corners is being provided at no cost by advertising giant Clear Channel Outdoor.

It's the latest in a nationwide project that has helped G-men nab at least 14 crooks for crimes that include armed robbery, kidnapping and money laundering.

The initiative, launched in December 2007, is now active in 20 cities, with more than 1,000 billboards flashing the FBI's message along big-city highways and byways.

"My favorite story is of the mother and son driving by one of the billboards in Albuquerque," Kalko said. "The mother sees a familiar face, then looks at her son and says, 'Is that you?'

"The son says, 'Yes,' and she takes him into the police station."

The Times Square billboard will project images of missing children and relay high-priority security messages.

While many of the fugitives will have a New York connection, the billboard also will cater to international tourists by featuring rogues from around the globe.

"When you consider the number of eyeballs that are going to see the billboard, we couldn't ask for a better audience," Kalko said.

That is both good, and Sci-Fi scary....

Kind of reminds me of the movies where the falsely accused hero is being sought by police and his image is being flashed up everywhere. Almost Orwellian.....

I think this is a good idea though, sort of the Wanted posters of old, but in a more applicable role than a sheet of paper on a police bulletin board.

And of course there will be some who would (literally) kill to get their face up in lights like that.

It's a terrible idea.

^ This is a very good premise for a screenplay.

It would have to be a comedy -- maybe in the vein of To Die For (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK7sCD6jJa4) or King of Comedy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wVhCCo02P4&feature=PlayList&p=C60310E9DA4C8D50&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=75).

I'd want it to be Times Square 1975.

John Waters directing.

Devine starring.

Waters was so much better back then, before he got the big budgets.
