How is the engineering field in NYC?
Which types of engineers (if any) are most needed in the NYC area?
Do you know anywhere I can go to find this information?

Not an easy question to answer there....

There are many types of engineering, and many follow the building demand in the city. There are, however, retrofits and other endeavors that are almost always needed, even in recessions.

What are you looking at, and why? A bit of background may help.

Civil or environmental engineering

Civil Structural here.

My field is starting to pick back up, and did not have the usual slump during the winter due to the mild weather and resulting extended construction season.

"Civil" usually refers to infrastructure. That is always in demand in NYC in one way or another.

"Environmental" is a bit vague too. It can be just about anything from watershed design to sewerage treatment.

Again, a bit more detail would help! ;)
