View Full Version : Questions about staying in Harlem

Hi

I'm planning a holiday to NYC next year with my husband, and have been looking at staying at a B&B in Harlem - they seem to be cheaper & nicer than hotels we could afford in the more touristy areas of Manhattan.

My questions are: I understand that Harlem is now a safe area, but how safe would it be to ride the subway back there at night (say midnight or later)?

Also, as I have no concept of how long it takes to get around NYC, how long roughly would it take on the subway to get from Harlem to Times Square? (as that seems to be roughly in the middle of the island and would give me a good idea of things!)

We want to do as much as possible and go out in different places like Brooklyn, the Village, Chinatown etc (we'll be there for a week) but I just want to check that Harlem would be a good base and wouldn't mean we were too far away from things.

Thanks

ETA - the actual locations of the B&Bs we're looking at are W137th St; W139th St and south of W145th St if that helps!
