It was a wonderful day today. Why not go out and enjoy the boardwalk and beach? I went to the lesser ventured part of Coney Island, the western part. I learned a lot about that area today, at least the part by the boardwalk. I had thought it was full of projects and abandoned buildings. Surprisngly, the west end turned out to be quite pleasant.

Jewish retirement home, nice recent building

Second, older building in the same development. It's not as bluntly rectangular and bland from the beach side.

Fuzzy view of both from the beach

Apartment buildings by the west end

It's a real shame what happened to Coney. *It needs to step up, beachfront hotels and condos and a spanking new amusement park (better than Great Adventure) in *addition to the oldies-but-goodies that were around when Coney was the premiere resort in America. *

The city needs to stop making it a dumping ground and realize its potential.

They're redoing the subway station, one of several projects preparing its renaissance. Nice photos.

I couldn't open the pictures that were posted, but from the description I don't think the poster mentioned the ruins of the Lincoln Baths bungalow colony. *I am just drawn to their continued existence around West 30th Street and the Boardwalk. *Here's a picture I took of them a couple of months ago:

I saw them too, I was wondering what they were. The lots directly adjacent to them are for sale.

I've been told that the property the bungalows are on is owned by the city.
Yes there are two lots to the west of the bungalows that are for sale.

If Coney interests you, there is a wonderful book that I've been plugging called "Coney Island: Lost and Found". *It was written by Charles Denson, who grew up in Coney Island in the mid 1950's and really got to know the place. *The book is not just a history of Coney Island, but a very personal account of his own life and experience.
It's been out a couple of months.

In a couple of minutes, I'm going to get on my bike and take a ride into Coney. *Although it's a little cooler than last week, it is sunny and I hope to visit with some of the ghosts of Coney Island.

Today while shooting for a school photo project I noticed permits and a site. A new 6 floor residential building on West 22nd St between Surf Ave and Highland View Ave (which, by the way, is a whopping one block long).

I would really hold off on anything until the city comes up with its Master Plan for CI. It's due out in the coming months and this would dictate a lot of development in the area and what can and cannot be done.
