There are famous types all over the city. *I think a lot fo the movie/music people live downtown.

I know there is a building on Perry St. where Lenny Kravitz and some others live.

Any those new buildings on West St. (Meier) have a lot - Calvin Klein, Nicole Kidman.

Harrison Ford lives somewhere in Chelsea.

Bruce Willis in Trump Tower.

I dunno, they're all over. *But, they always say, one of the great things about living in NYC is that NYers don't make a big fuss. *I agree with that - we're too damn cool, baby!

I'm 95 percent sure I saw Justin Theroux, the director from Mulholland Drive, walking his dog in Washington Square Park last summer...

What makes my head turn even more is the second-tier celebrities and character actors: *"Hey, wasn't that what's-his-name from Law and Order?" or "What movie was he in? * I know I saw him in something!" * In midtown I've seen Jackie Mason (he frequents a deli in the Garment district), Richard Belzer, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, John C. Reilly, Rosie Perez, The Rock, Paul Giamatti, whats-his-name, whats-her-name, you-know-who. *And I don't even live in Manhattan, I just work there. *And then you see movies being filmed (I caught a scene from MIB II) and premiers (I stumbled upon The Lord of The Rings premier -- Harrison Ford, Gov. Pataki, and all the stars of the film were in attendance), award shows, interviews in those glass-walled studios. *Mid-town is just teeming with celebrities. *Throw a rock in any direction and you'll probably hit one and then get sued.

They're all over the Village and SoHo too. There must be a lot who live down there because I often see them doing "normal" things in "normal" clothes: jogging, shopping, eating, pushing strollers - I'm sure I walk right by them most of the time without knowing. And yes dbhstockton, more times than not their names escape me, but I'm sure I've seen them before.

Upper West Side is full of celebs too....

Not to beat this to the ground, but don't forget 2 of the best:

Jerry Seinfeld and Howard Stern - UWS

Howard Stern has a house in Oyster Bay. *Not much chance you'll ever run into him out there.

Zoe
February 15th, 2003, 09:13 AM
Harrison Ford actually lives in the TWT. *The travel channel just had a show on Trump 2 nights ago and they were specific about that. *Also Steven Spielberg lives in Trump Tower when he is not in LA.
Julia Roberts lives right on Grammercy Park.

I saw J-Lo & Ben Affleck in Tribeca a block west of the Tribeca Grand - just walkjng & holding hands.

Walked by Bruce Willis in Central Park.

Ran into (literally) Art Garfunkel on Fifth Avenue.

Sat in front of Bette Midler & Lainie Kazan at a Hairspray preview.

I know David Bowie has a penthouse in SOHO on Lafayette just south of the puck building.

A minor celeb just moved in around the corner from me, Dr. Joyce Brothers. She gutted a townhouse on 85th between 1st and York, glitzed it up and piggy-backed two new floors on top. I see her every so often getting dropped off by her chauffer-driven caddy.

*Woody Allen also has a townhouse on 91st between Madison and Park. He's been involved in a NIMBY fight over putting a condo tower up on the corner. (The NIMBY's won that one, what was to be 16 floors will now only be 9)

Also Penelope Cruz bought a place recently at the Chelsea Mercantile, that building seems to be loading up on celebs.

This is a bit off topic, but do you guys know what members of the Hollywood elite hang out in Hell's Kitchen? I was walking by this cafe on 42nd and there were a bunch of photographers hanging around outside. They went at it when this one girl who looked kinda like Tara Reid except with curly hair and a bit thicker came in.

COPING

Basking, and Blushing, in the Shine of Celebrity

By WENDELL JAMIESON

http://graphics7.nytimes.com/images/2003/10/11/nyregion/colm.184.gif
Lisa Haney

THE first time I brushed up against fame was on Madison Avenue when I was a teenager. I was walking along when some construction workers started yelling at me: "Hey, Rocky, what's up?'' I looked around and realized that they weren't yelling at me but at the man walking next to me, who was Sylvester Stallone.

Not too long after this, I was waiting in line in Tower Records in the Village when I stepped on the foot of the man in front of me, who was David Byrne of the Talking Heads. I looked him in the eye and said, "I'm a big fan of yours.'' Word of this encounter spread quickly around my high school in Brooklyn, and when I excitedly started to tell my friend Dave that I had bumped into Byrne in Tower Records, he cut me off - "Yeah, and I heard you said a dopey thing.''

Celebrities are everywhere in New York, not just in the gossip columns but come to life. They are as common as bus fumes, but New Yorkers still get all silly around them. It's a strange case of reverse provincialism: we like living in a city that draws and even creates celebrities, but when we encounter them, we say stupid things, we shout unwanted greetings.

The encounters have increased in recent years, although sometimes only second hand. Celebrities stalk me from a distance, with one degree of separation; one day a friend canceled on me because she was lunching instead with Florence Henderson.

But these sightings can have benefits, too. For example, I enjoy the restaurant Pastis in the meatpacking district, and I've been able to judge its waning arc of hotness not by how hard it is to get a reservation but by the famous people I've seen there.

A few months after it opened, there was Julianne Moore, eating breakfast. A few months after that, there was Salman Rushdie with a beautiful woman on a far banquette, his back very much to the wall. Two years later, there was Al Goldstein, the publisher of Screw magazine, on the day of his conviction, later overturned, of harassing a female employee. He was greeted with solemn hugs and words of condolence by members of the wait staff.

But all this is nothing compared to what happened around the corner from Pastis on a Friday night in January 2001.

I was dining with my wife, Helene, and two of our closest friends, Dan and Alison, at the restaurant-club Lotus, on 14th Street off Ninth Avenue. A big night out for four new parents. We had booked a table for 8 p.m., early by celebrity standards, and watched as the place filled up. The service was a little slow; at 10 p.m. the captain told us he needed the table for a new party and offered us drinks and dessert on the house if we were willing to move downstairs to the basement lounge.

The lounge was nearly deserted, with only one large party at a table in the back. We sat down to a new round of drinks just as a man who looked a bit like Ben Affleck, the actor, walked by and joined the crowd at the far table.

"That guy looked like Ben Affleck,'' Helene said. This comment prompted a loud and increasingly drunken discussion at our table of all things Ben Affleck: Helene and Alison went on about his cuteness at some length. Helene said she liked him in "Chasing Amy.'' Dan had recently seen "Reindeer Games'' on video and was not impressed.

"Did you see that movie?'' Dan demanded loudly. "That movie was terrible! Did you see it? I'm telling you, God, it was awful.'' Louder and louder, he went on and on. "Wendell, I'm telling you, you should rent it just to see how bad it was.''

Maybe it was to block out all the shouting, but I put my head down on the table for just a second, and as I did, a tiny thought started to form in the deepest recesses of my brain; perhaps the man at the far table didn't just look like but -.

I looked up just as Ben Affleck, the actor, came up to us, put his hands on our table and leaned in toward us with a smirk. "I hope you all have a wonderful dinner,'' he said after a short but meaningful pause. Then he walked out the door.

My wife, not surprisingly, was furious. "He probably thought we were tourists, or something,'' she stormed at me. Actually, Mr. Affleck might have been surprised to learn that we were all New Yorkers, one of whom had rubbed shoulders with Sylvester Stallone, stepped on David Byrne's foot and come to grips with the painful realization that he is a less appealing lunch companion than Florence Henderson.

135th and Lenox, in the Pan Pan Restaurant. And yeah, she is pretty hot. :D

So if, in the future, you stumble upon an episode of Making the Video, in which you see her walking by some guy with a Doors beanie, and a half puzzled, half flustered look on his face, you can say that you know him.

It's going to be quite the full house when Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen move into their new downtown digs.

Sources say the tantalizing teens, best known to young adults and dirty old men for their twin turns on TV, have purchased two apartments in the new Morton Square development, presently under construction in the West Village.

The inseparable 17-year-old West Coast thespians are planning to combine two apartments - a one-bedroom and a three-bedroom, for which they paid approximately $3.5 million - and turn it into one big dollhouse when the Morton Square complex, comprising apartments, lofts and town houses, is completed next year.

A spokesperson for Morton Square had no comment.

Could that mean the girls are planning to attend college in the area?

The high school seniors certainly can afford a pricey place to crash, since they have a combined net worth of $76 million.

Downtown Diddy

It will be interesting to see how Sean "P.Diddy" Combs and his new neighbors get along under one roof. The hip-hopping, marathon-hoofing music mogul just bought a snappy four-bedroom, 4,300-square-foot loft at 169 Hudson St. that had an asking price of $3.65 million.

The 12-unit building's residence will include Sam Waksal's daughter, Alana Waksal, who bought her place after selling some, uh, shares of stock, and ketchup heir Chris Heinz, stepson of presidential wannabe Sen. John Kerry. The unit's seller, Dr. Kelly Posner-Gerstenhaber, who is the granddaughter of the late financier Victor Posner, will move on up to the penthouse.

Watts up

Speaking of Combs and lofts, Aussie actress Naomi Watts has been combing downtown Manhattan for a place to call her own. Our spies recently caught her scoping out a loft in SoHo going for slightly less than $2 million.

My sightings are usually along the lines of "I'm pretty sure that was..."

Anyway:

50 Cent, in the Village
Sean Lennon and Bijou Phillips, by Union Square
Denis Leary, heading into the Trump building at Columbus Circle
The Detective from Law and Order who used to be Ally McBeal's boyfriend, on the UWS (I think they were filming)
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, Union Square
Mike Bloomberg, riding the #6 from City Hall (he got off at 42nd - I was right next to him and couldn't think of anything to say)
Ewan McGregor, filming something Downtown in back of the NY Sports Club on Water street.

My wife, who worked for a year at a Danny Meyer restaraunt, has enough of these sightings to last both her and my lifetime already.

I've seen alot of Celebs in Manhattan, but the real hotspots are the airports.

I ran into Henry Kissenger and his young tall blonde European Woman companion at the New Terminal 4 at JFK, from the conversation I think he was heading to Zurich or Geneva.

Chaz Pulmeneiri (spelling) Newark Airport Terminal A boarding a UAL flight to LA

Method Man at Terminal C at Newark Airport

Lauren Hill , her rastafarian (lots of dreads) husband and a bunch of kids on a people mover at Newark Airport Terminal C.

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown at Newark Airport Terminal C

Peter Max at Newark Airport Terminal C

Some guy from the Back street boys (the one that went to rehab) at Newark Airport.

Bill Murray at Newark Airport

I had a phenomenal night of celebrity spotting - and rubbing elbows at times - at the premier of Troy at the Zigfeld Theater, and the after-party at Ciprianis last night. Sharing the red carpet with me were the cast members:
Brad Pitt
Sean Bean - the coolest dude ever
Eric Bana
Brian Cox - wearing a kilt
Helen of Troy (Diane Kruger)
Peter O'Toole - a true legend
Orlando Bloom, though I'm not sure if I saw him

And some others:
Jennifer Aniston
Will Smith
Snoop Dog & his posse
Bono
Kevin James - The King of Queens
One of the Olsen Twins
Spike Lee
Mark Burnett
Chris Noth (Mr. Big)
Jai - The Queer Eye guy
Erika - from The Apprentice
Jeff Probst, and possibly some Survivors
Eva Mendez - hottie

I'm forgetting some, I know...plus lots of other pseudo-famous people that I recognized but couldn't place.

The movie was decent, but mixing into the seats with the celebs was the best part. The party after was fun too, better than most was what I was told by my friend who brought me. Great food, bars everywhere, hot chicks, and most people on that list were happy to chat and seemingly having a good time. Plus that Bowery Savings Bank (Ciprianis) is such a great space, always a treat. I'm hurting now, but it was worth it.

I think there are also a lot of up and coming young actors/actresses that do shows on Broadway. Some of them end up doing TV and film.

There is a kids show called Lazytown on Nickleodeon that has a character called Stephanie in it. Her real name is Julianna Rose Mauriello and she has done several Broadway shows etc before moving onto TV.

I think she may be from Manhattan but not sure.

So who knows...The up and coming ones you see in the Broadway shows may soon be hitting the TV and big screen.

Yep, saw him schlepping down a street once. Was having lunch on a bright beautiful NYC day, some seafood restaurant, Blue something or other. They had great salmon and Pelligrino sparkling water is all I really remember.. Oh, and the nice company I was with.

He's much shorter than I thought he'd be, and when he walked, he sorta, well, best way I can explain it is "short mans style" like he was hopping up from one leg to the other. LOL.

Also saw the guy who played the son of Walter Matthaw in "Grumpier Old Men" along w. Anyone remember the Inconsiderate Cell Phone Man? He was in those promos/advisories or something before movies (at all the Lowes movie theatres, I believe) that warn you to shut off your cell phones and stuff. I don't know his name but i saw him on 45th between 5th and 6th avenues... I know he did the Net Zero commercials for a while and is sometimes on VH1's "Best Week Ever" and stuff.

Oh and the other day at the AStor Place stop I saw Sam Rockwell. He's been in a bunch of movies but he's not terribly popular I think. I know he was in Matchstick Men, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (?), and he was the really crazy cell/inmate in The Green Mile -- his character stomps on the little mouse.

Yes, that would be him, Molto Mario himself. He's had some trouble lately with opening a new restaurant somewhere in Manhattan. He's usually great on Iron Chef America, but his Molto Mario show is probably the closest thing to teaching cooking without actually cooking. The man can be exhausting.

They built a special back hallway for Ricky Martin to exit his Time Warner home straight from the elevators to the garage, so he wouldn't have to walk through the main entreance.

So me and my friends go to Carolines last night to catch the comedy show, and lo' and behold one of my all time favorite rappers comes and sits at the table right next to us. I am speaking off course of the one and only ICE-T! Him and his wife and entourage were chillin' right next to us for the whole night. Real nice guy, we all got to meet him and shake his hand, and hang out with him for the show. I've lived in NYC almost all my life, but that was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had!!

I used to live on the apartment above that Durst dude who later chopped us his neighbor in Galveston. I am told that in his apartment application under "Pets" he put "roaches."

It's crazy that could be sitting pretty much anyplace in New York City and not notice that you could be sitting a row or 2 in front of a famous celebrity. When I saw Monty Python's Spamalot, Marie Osmond happened to be sitting a 1 row in front of me. Other celebrities I happened to spot while on my trip:

The Today Show team (Matt, Ann, Natalie)
Donald Trump (today show)
Piers Morgan (today show)
Trace Atkins (today show)
Sarah Jessica Parker in Midtown
Kelly Ripa in TriBeCaQuite exciting! I hope to see more in July! :D

I waited on line with John Tutturo and his wife and son last spring while I was waiting to send for my passport at the Farley Post Office. Talked to him and his wife for about an hour and a half. Really nice people, they were getting a passport from the same service I was and it was for their son.

1. I saw Louis Black sitting with a person who looked to an agent or personal assistant at Newark Airport last year while waiting for a flight to O'Hare. I said hello to him and shook his hand. Real nice guy, very understated.

2. Now this will sound strange, but a few years back I was exercising at the Equinox on 85th. It was late Sunday evening they were getting ready to close and I swear I was bench pressing next to Jason Giambi. Didn't say hi to him though, he seemed to be involved with a trainer.

3. My g/f had a conversaton with Christian Slater in 2005 while waiting to see The Glass Menagerie. She spotted him going into a Starbucks, walked over and said hello and preceded to talk to him about acting, the show, others he was in etc.. he seemed very genuine and approachable. Shortly thereafter, he was arrested at LGA for fondling a business woman. I am not sure how that went

4. Fantasia (American Idol) lived in my building while she appeared in "The Color Purple".

5. Armani Toomer used to live here too, but has since moved.

Saw Kelly Ripa yesterday afternoon walking in the Tribeca area. I was talking with BrooklynRider and Kelly looked RIGHT at me but I was to starstruck to stop her. :(

I'm a really big Kelly Ripa fan!

I read in a forum about how this guy and his friend saw Christopher Walken buy a hot dog. They we're totally starstruck and couldn't stop staring. Then Walken looked at them and said "I know."

Celebrity sighting in Hoboken

David Schwimmer standing outside (smoking a cigarette?) the Three A's bar on Grand Street in Hoboken, my wife and I were walking from the St.Anne's Festival to Leo's. We happened to stop in front of the Three A's Bar to ask someone for directions to Leo's, I looked at this guy standing next to me and I thought to myself "wow this guy looks exactly like that guy from Friends". He then started talking to his friend and instantly I recognized his voice as "Ross", he was asking his friend if anyone inside had recognized him to which his friend responded "yeah the cops in the back".

My Wife and I didn't talk with him, we just kept walking to Leo's once we got directions from someone. I couldn't think of anything to rap with him about except to ask how much of a pain in the ass is Jennifer Anniston, I don't think celebrities like talking about anyone but themselves.

I was not a big friends viewer, although I watched it now and then. I did however love the HBO series "Band of Brothers", I thought that was fantastic.

Tall dude.

The Reinvention of Kirsten Dunst;

Just a typical day downtown for Kirsten Dunst.

Irina Aleksander goes on the trail of Kirsten Dunst (http://www.observer.com/2008/style/gossip-girls), who took up residence in her $3 million Tribeca penthouse in March and has since been spotted all over (down)town--hanging out near the DJ booth at the Beatrice Inn, wandering the West Village in her trademark Ray Bans, dancing at Bowery Electric. Is New York courting her, or is she courting New York?

I do not live in an area where you can see celebs walking down the sidewalk everyday. I live in residential Iowa, and can count the number of celebs I have seen in my life on one hand. That's why people, like myself, get so excited when we see them.

I think its fascinating to see someone in the flesh who you have seen many times only on tv. My favourite, Jessica Alba at the world premier of Fantastic Four, that was a gooood day.

I got a thrill when I walked into a 9th av. drugstore to
fill a prescription. While I was waiting I got to watch Chris Rock acting out a scene from "I Think I love My Wife"
- the part where he was buying condoms.
It was all we could do to keep from laughing our heads
off while they were filming!
